PC Virus, why??

As for why people write the virus programs, some nerds are just bored and occupy thier time creating virus' and then sit back and get some sort of self satisfaction in seeing the havoc they wreak. These people don't have the social skills to get attention in a positive way so they feel like they have to get it from somewhere else. They also have the mindset that society is being unfair to them so they try to take their anger from social ineptitude out on as many people as possible via a computer virus. Plus there is little way for the virus to be traced back to them if they format the program correctly so it's a "free" way for them to annoy as many people as possible. IMO they are the scum of the computer world and should be punnished greatly for what they do.

Can't say it much better than this.

Re: PC Virus, why??

Very timely - I just sent this out to all of my computer users. I usually send them something related to computer security about once a week.

Viruses, Worms and Trojans

With all of the emphasis placed on securing home and business systems from attack by malicious software, I thought it would be worthwhile to provide everyone with a definition and an example of a virus, a worm and a Trojan. Keep in mind that all three types of “malware” can be programmed to do various things to your computer. Anything from automatically displaying a message on your screen, to gathering data about every website you visit, to causing enormous numbers of pop-ups, to allowing a hacker to remotely control your system, or even to actually deleting data from your hard drive. But in all cases, the end result is that your computer will be doing something beyond your control and quite possibly without your knowledge.

A virus is a program that infects a computer by attaching itself to another program or file, and propagating itself when that program or file is opened. A computer can become infected by files downloaded over a network or from the Internet, or by the installation of new software, or by opening an email attachment. The main characteristic of a virus, is that it usually infects otherwise “normal” files on a computer. For example, the CEEFOUR virus infects Word documents and will spread to all Word documents that a user opens on an infected system.

A worm is a computer program that can make copies of itself, and then spread through connected systems without any user intervention. For example, the SASSER worm exploits a flaw in a Microsoft Windows application to propagate. It will scan all systems that it can find, including systems that are attached to a live Internet connection, and when it finds a system that has not had the flaw patched; it will copy itself onto the new system.

A Trojan is a program that appears to be useful and harmless but contains a hidden payload. Many of the free toolbars, search engines, screen savers, greeting cards and other supposedly helpful programs that you can download for free from the Internet contain Trojans. Usually, a system becomes infected with a Trojan through the intentional installation of a program, although some web sites may install one without user intervention.

In the past four months, our anti-virus software has detected and stopped over 1400 different instances of viruses, worms and Trojans.

Re: PC Virus, why??

Most of the viruses can come from overseas. As stated it seems like it comes from college students who are too smart for their britches frown.gif I think they are making a statement or something. There must be millions of $$ lost every month just due to viruses. It also cost millions for companies to try to protect against them. I love hearing when they catch someone and nail them to the wall shocked.gif

Yup thats one reason.

Here is another...even worse one...

One guy I knew in college (real jerk) was a computer science major. Whenever he wanted a little cash he wrote a fancy virus, released it anonomously onto the net and then called up the antivirus companies a few days later and told them he "cracked the hacker's code" confused.gif and could sell them the anti code to make removing the virus easier. They usualy shelled out between 1 and 3 grand PER VIRUS. shocked.gif Depending on how hard the virus was to remove without the anti code. He never got in trouble because no one could prove he released the virus in the first place. mad.gif
