I have used decoys in the past but they have never seemed to produce. What is the best time to start using your decoys and what are the best ways of placing them..... buckee Posted April 12, 2005 Report Share Posted April 12, 2005 Re: decoys....please help I'm no expert on decoys..trust me ..LOL I've made my own silhouette decoys, and there are some days were the deer just run right out to them and other times where they actually spook the deer. My best set-up was when I was in a tree along a bush-line overlooking a winter-wheat field. I had a deer trail to my right and a deer trail to my left, coming across the fence, where the deer would enter the field. The decoy was a feeding doe, that I set up directly in front of me out in the field about 75 yrds. The deer would come over the fence, and walk out in front of me with their eyes on the decoy. Sometimes they would do the ol' stomp trick to try to get the decoy to look up. Other times they would cross the fence and head straight out to it. I've heard that during the rut, a bedded doe (head up) and a buck near her rear end, (head out toward the doe) works well during the rut, although I've never tried it myself. Depending on the time of year, for instance, ..you may want to try a doe and fawn, early in the season, if your out to fill a doe tag. You might even get lucky and get a nice buck to check out the new girl in the neighbourhood. Whatever you use, be sure you spray it down with some anti-scent spray, and then maybe add a few squirts of the good stuff to it's rump, like doe, doe-in-heat, or dominant buck, depending on the season. Personally, I think the best time to use a decoy is in the very early part of the season, or late in the season. The rut and pre-rut are crazy enough without having to worry about decoys.
