western NY bowhunter
Re: The NY season so far They're ruttin' hardcore here in WNY! I don't know how many people have told me in the past few days about the big buck that they almost hit / saw cross the road in front of them chasing does or with their noses glued to the ground. Last night (with the spotlight) I saw a beautiful big 8-pt. doggin' the crap out of a doe. There were a couple of yearling bucks on the scene too and the big boy made sure he stayed positioned between the doe and them. A couple of times he stopped and just stared the little guys down. We saw another decent 7-pt. that crossed the road in front of us and he was acting all messed up...he just kept his nose to the ground the whole time and seemed oblivious to anything else that was going on around him. My dad was driving home from work last night and he had a huge buck cross the road infront of him looking for does. He turned around to get a better look at the buck in the headlights but he was too far away by then. Saturday night we were driving home from going out for dinner and we had a really long-tined P & Y class 8-10 pt. cross in front of us with his nose to the ground. So far I haven't had too much action going on while sitting in the stand. I did have a yearling buck run a doe by my stand yesterday morning. He looked funny...his neck was all swelled up and it looked like he had broken one of his antlers off. Last night after it stopped raining, I headed up to one of my stands and on the way I stopped to check a couple of old scrapes that are along the field edge about 60 yds. from my stand. When I got 10-15 ft. away from the scrapes I almost started gaging...all I could smell was that strong tarsal gland odor of a rutting buck. I must have just missed the buck that did it by minutes as he was freshening up the srapes after all the rain we had yesterday. I went by the scrapes as I was leaving an hour and a half later and couldn't smell a thing! Anyways, I hurried to get down to my stand thinking he might still be within hearing distance of my grunt call and I noticed some really big and really fresh deer tracks in the mud that went within 15 yds. of my stand. Man, if I had only gotten there 20 minutes earlier! Oh well, maybe I'll catch him in the act tonight. My dad had a big 8-pt. come in Wed. morning that never offerred him a shot. He grunted at him but the buck never payed attention to the call...the only thing that he had on the mind was does. The woods around here are just torn up with scrapes, but I haven't seen a whole lot of fresh rubs. So yes, after a slow start...the rut is really starting to heat up here in WNY. They're definately starting to get into the chasing phase. This weekend and next week should be primetime to be sitting in a deer stand. Good luck to everyone. Turkeygirl
Re: The NY season so far Well if you all don't know yet, lol, I got a nice 7 point Friday evening. It was cold, saw some deer in the field from my stand then a buck comes out in front of me and right down the shooting lane and gives me a 10 yard broadside shot,, only went 40 yards, what a sweet deal! I might keep trying for a doe but at leats now I can work on turkeys. This buck though is getting a nice plaque for it!
NYBUCK
Re: The NY season so far Dan, That really stinks. Sorry about that. I would let you come up and hunt where I hunt south but the year has been horrible so far. Friday in the high winds and rain/snow I did manage to see quite a few deer but nothing close enough. Saturday I hunted pretty much all day and had 4 turkey hunters walk right through where I was hunting. Apparently the sacred ground that we used to enjoy all by ourselves is not so sacred anymore. The landowner is letting everyone and anyone in to hunt. It is a small patch of woods and the deer are all but gone and someone is going to get hurt. Sunday I thought would be good with the cold front moving in, but I didn't see a deer all day. I can't remember when it was so bad. I don't know if it is because of the hunting pressure or what. Never even saw a buck this week-end, not even a little one. My brother who hunts north with riffle is saying the same thing. He usually sees a lot of deer but is not seeing anything. I do know that a friend of mine killed a monster, 21" spread 10 point that weighed 179 lbs. He got that up north also. I am so looking forward to going to Illinois, I leave on Thursday. I just may not come back to NY.

hort
Re: The NY season so far The Rut Is On In NY!! Shot a nice 8 pt. Monday morning (11/8/04). He was with a doe. After I released my arrow (20 yds), he ran off along with the doe. He made it 150 yards and piled up in the log road! After they left the scene, a lopsided 4 pt., a 4 pt and a spike, walked through, one at a time. All three with their noses to the ground! My buck had a 16-1/2" inside spread and weighed 140 pounds field dressed. This is my third year bow hunting. Last year I shot another 8 pt. from the same stand! Bowhunting is awesome!!! Now I can work on filling my doe tags! Have fun guys!!

western NY bowhunter
Re: The NY season so far My computer crashed so I haven't been on here in a few days, but...I killed a nice doe a couple of weeks ago and then my nicest buck ever with a bow on monday morning! I was only in the stand for 20 minutes and I looked over a saw a doe standing in the brush about 25 yds. below me. I went to grab for my bow and out of the corner of my eye I saw a big buck come walking out towards the doe! He was all bristled up with his ears layed back and looked kinda pissed. I grabbed my bow and started to turn towards the buck Just then I heard a deer running behind me coming right towards the stand. I froze...and a nice 8-pt. comes trotting by at less than 10 yds. Even though he was a smaller that the other buck, he was still a nice deer and I didn't think that the bigger one was gonna come up my way so I decided to take a shot at the 8-pt. if he presented one. He stopped broadside at 10 yds. and I sent a NAP Nitron through his lungs/heart. He kicked his back legs up and went trotting off. After about he went about 30 yds. he stopped and stood still, flicking his tail. He started to get all wobbly and layed down within 20 yds. of the tree that I was in. I thought he was down for the count, so I hung my bow back up and put the binocs on the bigger buck which was standing about 30 yds. away in the brush watching the buck that I had just shot. Upon closer inspection he turned out to be a 10-pt with a broken G-4 on his left side making him a 9-pt. He wasn't real wide but had some good mass and probably would have score around 120-125". Finally, he went off after the doe and I turned back toward by buck. I couldn't believe it...he had gotten up and was slowly walking back the way he had come from. I knew that he was a dead deer walking though because I could see the arrow hole right behind his shoulder. I waited a few minutes after he went out of sight and got down and found my arrow and it was completely coated in bright red blood. I left and came back about an hour and after following a short, but really heavy blood trail I found him. He ended up going about 70-80 yds. I was pretty pumped. After I found him I realized that he was a nice 2.5 yr. old buck that I watched all summer and fall in the alfalfa field across the road from my house. He definately wasn't the biggest buck in the area but he was still a pretty good buck.. 145 lbs., 14.5" spread, 6.5" G-2 (the other one was broken off about half way up. After having 21 bucks within 40 yds. this season...I finally got my buck! The only thing that would have been better would have been if my dad coulda got a shot at the big 11-pt. that snuck in on him last night. The buck was only 10 yds. away but had my dad totally pinned down in the tree. He said he was a monster though...a basic 10 pt. with a big mule deer fork on one of his G-2's and probably had about a 18" spread. Hopefully, he'll get another crack at him. Until then, I still have 4 doe permits in my pocket and hopefully I can fill another one with my bow. Good luck to everyone.

I'll probably wait to get them developed until after gun season at which time the film will hopefully be all used up.
NY911Bowhunter
Re: The NY season so far TTT For Jim! Friday it was snowing here, so I left work a few hours early (gotta love the civil service!) to hunt a stand in a small wooded area behind my Granfather's house. It was cold, snowy, and wet, but I finally had deer come within bow range! I saw a bunch of does, they went the other way from me, but one kept lingering - she came to within 25 yards with some help from The Can...circled around, behind my tree - into a teeny tint shooting lane - either a heart shot or a tree shot - yup - I hit the tree!!!!! Oh well!
