Fly fishing as breast cancer therapy

I was reading the fall 2004 issue of Women in the Outdoors and they have an article about a group that has started fly fishing trips for women battling breast cancer.

Anyone who has spent time fishing knows how theraputic just listening to the water is, but the techniques used in fly fishing match the exercises women are given after having a breast removed. The casting motion keeps the chest muscles from tightening and making arm movements more comfortable. This makes fly fishing a perfect activity to heal both the soul and the body!

The program is called Casting for Recovery. At the time of this publication, Orvis was the founding sponsor. Here's a link if you know someone this can help, or just want to volunteer! Casting For Recovery Homepage

There is also a few things you can purchase with proceeds going to fund the program. I really love the braclets they are selling, but it is a little out of my price range at the moment.

Re: Fly fishing as breast cancer therapy

Deerhuntress,

I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but it's great that you have put at least one surgery behind you and are doing good! Fly fishing is suppose to be very good therapy after having a breast removed because the casting action mimics exercises to keep that area from becoming too tight when healing.

I pray that your good health continues!
