I had a terrific morning. I saw 500-600 head of elk, over 150 deer, 5 struttin gobblers, 2 hens & 2 gobblers who talked to me but I never saw. Score 1 Merriams for Team #7. He's 17 lbs.---3/4" spurs & 8 1/2 " beard.

The actual hunt was exciting. I went up to my honey hole "Gomez Canyon"----I heard a gobble as I was getting my Realtree Hardwoods jacket on!! I hussled down the canyon towards the gobble. I owl hooted a couple of times to actually pin point the location. I was about 3/4 of a mile from the truck. I set-up on a little finger of ponderosa pines that juts into the big meadow. It's comes from a box canyon. This was where I had pin pointed the 1st gobble. I set out my decoys & got ready. I soft yelped on my Quaker Boy 'Grand Old Master" box call. I immediately got 2 gobbles from up in the box canyon. Niether were from the 1st bird I had heard. I sat still. Gobbling continued at a fevering rate. I then took out my Lynch Box call---I again soft yelp & they hammered back. One cutting off the other's gobble. I used 2 calls hoping--that there were more than just 1 hen here. Then I hear--WOOSH. He's down. I hear a booming gobble on the other side of the finger of pine I'm sitting on. I adjust---I move at little bit so I can cover that side. I again soft yelp on the Lynch. Another Booming Gobble, he's real close. The I see movement about 40 yards away behind a piece of sage brush. I can see his head "pop" out just a periscope!! He sees the decoys & steps out into a Full Strut. He"s all puffed out & his fan in full display. He's in all his glory. He comes straight towards the decoys. I let him come to about 25 yards. Gun is up. I move the barrel just a little. He sticks his head up out of the strut. A load of Federal # 4's closes the deal. A GREAT morning. The other one in the box canyon is still gobbling as I pick him up & head towards the truck !! It's 6:40 AM.

On my way out of Gomez Canyon---I see 4 more strutters & 2 hens. Then on my way back home the fields are alive with deer & elk. Groups of 10 to 12 deer were common.. As I cross the "Vega" ----large, large meadows. Elk were everywhere. Big herds----as they are coming off the wintering grounds & are staging to go back up into the high country.

I LOVE COLORADO--- grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif
