Turkeygirl
Ok, this occurred to me on Sunday while walking into my stand. We all hunt for a reason, whether it is for food(because it is so healthy and good for us, not too mention cheap and we are suppose to use God's resources wisely), or for the trophy, or because we love the outdoors and hunting period, or for some other reason I dunno about. What I thought though is why we come back year after year, season after season, to hunt. I think besides those other reasons, it is the pure excitement and adrenaline rush. What other activity provides the rush of a deer walking out broadside, a big rack coming through the trees? For me even squirrel hunting gives me an adrenaline rush, mabe not as big as hunting deer or turkey. We never know what to expect while hunting, it is pure challenge. Hunting is an instinct; man way before us had to hunt to survive. It is the unknown, the adrenaline, the excitement that makes us wait for the opening day to come and we seek more Ok, you can see I'm weird now, lol, but I can't help what my mind comes up with
RangerClay
Re: A thought into why we hunt You are not weird, just normal. This is just your normal instincts doing what they were meant to do. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Ranger
10acboy
Re: A thought into why we hunt I hunt because that is how I was raised. My grandfather taught me that you can live off the land (with the exception of a few neccesities). We planted gardens and harvested a majority of our food. I just feel on top of the world knowing that I have the knowledge to provide for my family in so many ways. I thank my grandfather for all the memories. Doc
Re: A thought into why we hunt I think it is also possible that our need to hunt has an element to it that is a bit more primal and buried so deep within the human psyche that we can't even truly define it. Humans are predators. We seek out and use the things that God and nature have provided us. We have all of human history genetically bred into us, and that history includes a predatory background that refuses to stay beneath the surface no matter how much we try to deny and ignore it. Today's hunters are just a little more honest about that facet of human nature. Doc
c_lou
Re: A thought into why we hunt I thought about how to reply to this for a while. For me it's partially about providing food for my family. We eat a lot of venison through the winter and then steaks on the grill during the summer. However, it's not just that. It's the feeling I get when I hear that twig snap. Immediatly my heart starts racing and I feel as if the entire woods can hear my rapid breathing. It's the not knowing if this will be the moment or if I will get the white flag salute. And it's the calm feeling I get just as I am about to release my arrow. I tell everybody I see, if I ever don't get that feeling, that's when I hang up my bow. That is why I hunt.
