Illinoisbowhunter
I have not been down there yet either but have heard of some people who have been down there before. I live in south central IL so its not all that far from here. Alot of people go down south around this area and come back with some nice bucks and great memories to share. Good luck, I think you'll enjoy it.

Guest 2500HD
Re: SHAWNEE NATIONAL FOREST I hunt down there all the time but the SNF is huge and covers many different areas. Any particular area you are headed to?
Guest danewguy
Re: SHAWNEE NATIONAL FOREST I went to college there for three years and also hunted SNF shotgun hunting for about 10 years I might be of some help. Around where are you going to be hunting/staying?
Guest danewguy
Re: SHAWNEE NATIONAL FOREST It has been a while but i had pretty good luck in Giant City State Park. It is about 15 minutes from Carbondale and there are tons of deer there. The only problem that I had with Giant City is that there are boundaries that are off limits to hunt and you have to sign in but these really aren't a big deal. If I still lived in Illinois I would probably still be hunting that area. Good luck where-ever you go. If you have any more questions that I can answer I would be glad to help... Guest 2500HD
Re: SHAWNEE NATIONAL FOREST Ahhhh...Little Grand Canyon! Your in my old stomping grounds. I grew up in that area and used to ride all the trails on 4-wheelers from Murphysboro to Bald Knob Cross every weekend. Been a long time since. You know how many parties, road trips, girls....well that is another story! Actually any area is a good area as long as you can get as far a way from people as possible. Trust me the locals know most of the best spots but there are many places to go and LGC should be fine. Take the trail and start walking then get off the trail as far as possible because you are close to SIU and there are always people taking nature walks on the trails. I would not recommend gun hunting that area or bowhunting that area the weekend before gun season. Every Joe Blow in the county will be down there hanging stands and tromping throught the woods the weekend before. Gun season is like a war zone. Remote places would be your best bet. Good Luck!
