Tominator
Any half-way decent gunsmith can install a screw-in choke system. I blasted out the muzzle on my Ithaca, so a local gunsmith removed the damaged muzzle and installed a Barnes choke system.
too_pointer
Re: Mossberg 500 question Chris, do you remember what the cost was. ?? If there is enough steel in the barrel for tapping, it would be fine. too_
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Mossberg 500 question I've heard of gunsmiths that have threaded barrels to put tubes. Mostly horror stories. I think I would buy a factory barrel from Cabela's or Bass Pro. I bet it comes out to the same money. Adding labor & cost of the tubes verus a new barrel & the 3 tubes it comes with. Nothing wrong with a spare barrel.
AJ
Re: Mossberg 500 question Bob is correct. Its cheaper to get a new Mossberg barrel than it is to have yours threaded. Plus, if your new barrel does not shoot straight, you can send it back for a replacement. Good luck with a gunsmith.
Tominator
Re: Mossberg 500 question [ QUOTE ] Chris, do you remember what the cost was. ?? If there is enough steel in the barrel for tapping, it would be fine. too_ [/ QUOTE ] Sorry Mike, I don't. Seems to me it was around $90. Back then I didn't have the use of the wonderful internet, and it was back when Ithaca was in and out of business quicker than my kids run in and out of the house. To be quite honest, the choke is extremely thin and fragile. As long as a choke is in, it's ok, but changing them is a bit delicate, and to be honest, I don't think I've carried that gun since getting my Montefeltro. The Ithaca has been retired until one of my kids wants to use it.
AJ
Re: Mossberg 500 question The typical rate for installing choke tubes is $75-$150 depending on the gunsmith.

Since the Mossberg 500 was introduced in 1962, I would venture to say that most of them do not have screw in chokes.
robk
Re: Mossberg 500 question take it too the smith and have him check the barrel out and see if it is thick enough for such a thing to be done and safely. then you can make your decision from that. saying that i would opt for a new upgrade rob k
