Guest MarylandQDMA
Hey all, I am heading up to my parents houst in NW VT. (Franklin), in june (the 15th to the 24). any how, the lake they are on bost a large pike poplation (avg. is 15 to 20lbs). being from Md. I have never fished for pike. I'm a largemouth bass guy. in any event, I realy want to catch a pike. I plan on artifical lures only (no live bate). any sugestions for catching a big boy? I plan on using my bass rig, a med. heavy spin rod w/ 14 lbs. fireline. at that time of year do you fish for them like bass along the shure line? Shaun_300
Re: PIKE FISHING (HOW?) the best way to fish for pike is using a lure that creates a lot of flashing in the water, like a spoon, or some sort of spinner bait. your rod, real and line sound great. the best thing to look for when fishing pike, especially the larger ones, is deep weedy areas. anywhere from 8-20 feet of water with a weedy bottom is usually best for pike. depending on water temperature, they could be in a bit shallower for feeding and spawning. another great place to find pike is at the mouths of rivers or creeks. if the fish are turned on, a larger topwater bait would be suitable for fishing pike. it sure is a blast to see the wake coming up behind a topwater lure, then them hitting it is like a crocodile! i fish for pike all the time, it sure is a blast. any other questions i'd be glad to try and answer for ya. Good Luck man!
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: PIKE FISHING (HOW?) Whenever I've fished "up north", I've always caught a ton of them on a spinnerbait with a big willowleaf blade. Something like a #5 - #7. Next best are soft plastic jerkbaits like a super fluke. Fish the same type of water you would for bass - shallow weedy cover, drop offs, wood, etc.
clayman
Re: PIKE FISHING (HOW?) The classic red and white striped Eppinger's Daredevil is a pike slayer! I've also had great success with casting or trolling classic Rapala's in a variety of colors. Shaun pretty much addressed it for you. Guest MarylandQDMA
Re: PIKE FISHING (HOW?) Thanks all. I can not wate untill june 15th (driving up then). how active do you think they will be then? Frank
Shaun_300
Re: PIKE FISHING (HOW?) they will still be pretty active. right at the end of the winter up here, they go up the creeks and spawn. we usually can catch them opening weekend, which is the 2nd weekend of May. in June they will be out of the creeks, so i'd look around any weedy areas. what i've done is found a weedbed in about 8-10 feet of water, then troll a Mepps spinner tipped with a worm in about 18-20 feet of water. works quite well! another lure to pick up that you can't go wrong with is the Cotton Cordell Big-O. MAN these are GOOD lures! i only use the Chrome coloured ones, but if you are going to get this lure, make sure you pick up extras because them dang pike will rip ya off sometimes! good luck fishin! muggs
Re: PIKE FISHING (HOW?) all good advice above, bottomline: anything that's big and flashing, and anything topwater. If you're looking to really slay them, the biggest shiners you can find. As for locating them on lakes, you got me, I do most of my pike fishing on rivers. But shallow weed beds are a good place to start, I know you can find them there in the summer, as for know, they might be spawning there? SaskMan
Re: PIKE FISHING (HOW?) I agree, if they're active they'll hit anything. I confess to being a pike addict and have some pretty good success on them. Here is my top 3.' 1. BIG bucktail spinners- musky lures 2. BIG crankbaits, shallow runners 3. Spoons, any kind I usually fish them shallow, under 10 feet, shallow pike are usually more agressive than deep pike and nothing beats being shallow enough to watch them slam it, when they do, hang on!!!!
