Bow Hunter Derek
Re: Turkey fans....... Spray the beard and fan with Raid, that will kill them. Actually, if you remove all the meat from the tail and then degrease the tail in white gas (Coleman lantern fuel), you should not have any mites. To keep it forever, you need to get 100% of the meat off and all the fat from between the quills. Also need to remove the oil gland at the base of the first row of secondary feathers. Then soak the entire thing in white gas. Then wash it all out in dish soap. It'll look ratty, but nothing a hair dryer on a low setting can't fix in about a half an hour. Do all that and bugs will never be a problem with the tail.
huntinsonovagun
Re: Turkey fans....... Holy cow.....I have no idea how to get all that meat off. I tried the best I could. Bow Hunter Derek
Re: Turkey fans....... The easiest way (I've found) to get all the meat off is to use an Exacto knife. Go slow and don't cut the skin. When you get to the back bone, cut the meat away from the skin and then take side cutters and cut out the bone. The main fan quills are the most difficult. Just scrape and cut at the fatty meat between the quills. The quills are a lot longer than you would think. Get it all. Be sure to get up underneath between the main quills and the first row of secondary feathers. There is always a pocket of fatty stuff up there too. Take your time. It takes me about 2 hours to get one clean. The first time I ever did it I probably spent 4 hours or so. Here is an awesome link that steps you through it. How to Turkey Tail Mount That is pretty much the way I do it. The only thing I really do differently, is when mounting the final position, I lay out the fan face down and use hot glue at the quill base to get everything set. It's easier to work with than bondo. Be patient, take your time, and you'll have a mount to last your lifetime.
RTF
Re: Turkey fans....... Thats why I seperate all tail feathers one by one. No bone , no meat on the mount whatsoever. Hot glue all back together.
