First 2005 Tom

Tried to get this boy Saturday night, but was unsuccessful in shooting him, but I did figure out where he was roosted. Sunday morning I went in to the area from the back way, crossed the creek, got my feet wet and at 6:30am was sitting at the base of an oak tree about 100 yards away from the tree I thought he was in. I got situated and put a mouth call in. At 6:45am he made his first awaking gobble of the morning. I didn’t make any noise and in a few minutes he gobbled again. It was getting light so I took my cap off and made a fly down call. A hen flew down in front of me and went on up the hill. He gobbled again in the tree so I made a few light yelps with the mouth call and he flew down into a clearing straight in front of me, landed about 60 yards away and starting gobbling and strutting around. He strutted his stuff for a few more minutes and kept gobbling, then he broke strut and I guess he could see the hen that flew down and was going towards her. I knew he was about to follow that hen off so I pulled the trigger of the new mossberg 835 and at 7:10am I had my first gobbler of spring 2005 laying down 52 steps from where I had pulled the trigger.

He weighed in at 24 pounds, has a 9 1/2 beard, right spur is 1 1/4 and left spur is 1 1/8.

Re: First 2005 Tom

Thanks all, I am going to try to get another one after work one day this week. Yesterday afternoon I went by my sisters house and she told me her and her husband had been seeing some toms every morning and afternoon in a field by their house. Me and my sister drove by there and sure enough there was one out there strutting his stuff. Maybe in a couple of days I will have tom #2 of 2005 smile.gif
