RangerClay
I am staining & refinishing a rifle stock. I am a good woodworker but have never worked much with weapons. Do any of you have any tips or suggestions before I begin? I was planning on a stain and a spray exterior poly. Would you do this differently? Thanks in advance Ranger
ZooBear
Re: Stock finish question That will work fine. I use Tung oil myself because I can touch up scratches with my finger. Good luck!

Guest J_Owens_66
Re: Stock finish question Sand it with a pretty rough grit, then smooth it out with some smaller grit, say 220 grit or so. Then apply your stain generously, let it soak up all it wants. After that dries i usually use a wipe on poly (gloss) coat, give it several coats of this until the desired glossyness you want. Reassemble and there you have it. Hope this helps, i've done it a couple of times and man the stocks turn out beautiful. Good luck and lets see some pics when you are done.
