Deer & Antifreeze

Re: Deer & Antifreeze

I just did a quick google search about deer and antifreeze and it doesn't look good. Yes, it will kill the coyotes, but it will also kill every other animal that comes in contact with it because it seem most everyone of them will be attracted to the sweet taste.

I would be talking with your neighbor about a more humane and selective method of controlling the coyotes.

Coyotes are not in season right now so shooting is not a legal option. Technically these people are poaching too but I will not give my opinion on that. There is a lot of frustration with the high coyote population in our area right now and the havoc they are going reak on the fawn crop soon. I am worrying about the antifreeze killing deer more.

haha that antifreeze is a big rumor. there was a dog that chased deer all year round up by my buddy's cabin and they put out a whole bowl of antifreeze. it drank it all and never died. eventually the dog stopped coming around once the owner got a bunch of complaints.

NO, it is not a rumor. It most certainly does kill dogs and coyotes.

There are certain types of anti-freeze that are labeled "animal safe". So if your buddy just grabbed a bottle off the shelf, he may have bought the safe kind unknowingly.

Don't know about the effects on deer. I do know that people have soaked hamburger meat in antifreeze and left it out for stray dogs and coyotes. Deer wouldn't touch that.

I'd much rather shoot a coyote though!

Anti freeze is non-selective in what it kills. It will kill any and all wildlife that consumes it. I would confront the neighbor immediately about that.

Antifreeze kills. mad.gif

That dog stopped coming around because it died...plain and simple. crazy.gif

I remember a few years back, when the bear population and deer population dropped off substantually on the one piece of property I hunt.

I went for a walk one day (without my bow) over onto the native land next door to the piece I hunt. (3legs probibly remembers this.) I found 3 large milk jug type containers, just inside the bush-line, that had been chewed up real good by the bears, from the year before. That's the first thing I thought of...Antifreeze.

I have a feeling one of the neighbours were involved, and trying to get rid of the (troublesome at times) bears, but of course couldn't prove it.

There was a nieghbouring house about 200 yrds from where I found the containers.

Doing something like that is immoral, disgusting, illegal and a wanton destruction of wildlife. frown.gifmad.gif
