What bow for 5 year old...

My son is turning 5 in May and I wanted to get him started into archery since he is already showing an interest. What bow can a 5 year old shoot? The pro shop guy suggested this 9lb fiberglass longbow that you shoot arrows right from off the shelf of the handle. He said it was best because they didn't have to find an anchor point and its fun to get them interested. Just guess I was thinking something a little nicer. Whatcha think??

I mean this bow was pretty low quality and if I get him a recurve or longbow, I atleast want something a little nicer. Thanks

Re: What bow for 5 year old...

Bowtech has a compound out that is called the little rascal. I saw a kid shooting one at a 3-D shoot this past weekend. I don't know what the draw weight goes down to, but the bow was plenty small for a little guy. It just looked like a big bow only smaller. I bought Hoyt Banshees for my two boys but they have a pretty hefty draw weight on them. That hurdle is proving difficult for my eight year old and he is the stronger of the two. Go figure. Hmmm!

I'd look into a Mathews Genesis. It is highly adjustable in draw weight and length, so he could shoot it forever. wink.gif

Agree. Both my boys have Genesis now. They are shooting it distinctivley right now. Once they grasp the art to where I want them to be, we will do the sight thing wink.gif

Re: What bow for 5 year old...

gewt him a recurve and go form there unless you want to put the money out for a bow that he may not end up interested in. pearson has a couple of good kids bows with like 15lbs of draw weight and i know pse has a couple as does browning but i think for a starter keep it simple and get a recurve there are several out there

rob k

also make it fun and put up balloons and stuff for him to try and shoot at and make sure he is successful no matter to keep him going back

A Genesis is aweful expensive...

Not if you get it off EBAY BABY grin.gif.......But your right, I looked at them up at Kittery Trading Post in Maine and they are pretty off the wall with their price. I got both of mine off EBAY for about $50. If you look at the right time, you can probably get them for less.

I would go with a mathews genesis for a young shooter. That bow will be able to grow with him until hes ready to shoot a more heavy poundage bow.

5 is young, i have had kids 5 and older that could not pull a genesis, until i backed it down to around 10#, they max out at 20#, bottom line it all depends on the child and what they can handle, but yes there are bows out there to choose from.
