CPR...

Well tonight is recertification CPR for the Professional Rescuer. I can't wait until it's over, I don't why I dread it but I do. Maybe it is trying to remember all the numbers of breaths and chest compressions and how stuff differs when doing it on an infant or child. All this on a plastic dummy with one of your professors standing over you! Hopefully I'll never have to give anyone CPR...

Re: CPR...

When I was in the service I had to re-qualify every 6 months. mad.gif When I was coaching, we had to re-qualify every year.

I hated it. I never had to administer it, but when the adrenaline is flowing do you really think you're going to remember all the steps? Hopefully with enough practice, you will.

I hope you never have to either. I had to perform CPR on a guy a couple of years ago. I just pulled into the parking lot at work one morning and noticed a truck that had smashed into a light pole. The truck was still running and the guy was laid over inside. I opened the truck door, put the truck in park, turned the ignition off, and tried to revive the guy. He was unresponsive. I checked his pulse and nothing. I removed him from the truck and started CPR. Twice I got a faint pulse but no indication of improvement. By this time someone had called 911. I continued CPR until the ambulance got there. Let me tell you, I wasn't expecting something like that to happen that morning! Long story short, the guy ended up dieing and I felt really really bad about it. It was a tough day. frown.gif

Moral of the story: keep your certification up-to-date...you never know when you might need it.

Yes you will! I was an CPR instructor for 8 years with the American Red Cross. I had to teach at least two classes a year to keep my Instructor's Certification. I used to do CPR in my sleep! I could get somebody that was blue to pink in no time! Pink meaning good circulation with oxygen flowing through out the body! When I was running ambulance, I was on a lot of Cardiac arrests. Unfortunately, not many people survive this because the lack of care needed at that moment. If more people knew CPR, more people could make it! This was why I became an instructor, first aid is mostly common sense, but CPR needs a little more thinking.

You will do fine, just read your book a little and you will find that it will all come back to you! Good luck!

Re: CPR...

I have CPR so many times it is astounding!

One summer alone in Yonkers, my unit did 8 cardiac arrets in a 1 month period! (6 were "saves", 4 walked out of the hospital)

When Garth Brooks was doing his concert in Central Park, I was in a 3rd floor apartment kitchen doing CPR on a 50 y/o lady.

She was one who walked out of the hospital.

Re: CPR...

CPR is an excelent skill to have.

I got my CPR and advanced first aid Certification to be a climbing instructor.

Then AED(Automatic External Defibrilator) certification while working in a psychiatric hospital.

And just last year I did CERT training.(Comunity Emergency Response Team)

Haven't used anything but minor first aid so far...hope it stays that way but always beter to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!
