Ok my brother and i were just out listening last weekend before the season and we didnt hear anything gobbling all morning until about 8:30 when i called up two jakes.....but whats the best tactic to use....we just sat tight and gave out a few yelps and kee-kee's every 15-20 minutes....is that the right thing to do in that situation?? Wait for the birds to come to us?

I walk/sit/call/wait about an hour when nothin's going on, then repeat. Frequent places you know turkeys like and do the same. By midday if nothin's still not answering, I've been known to find a comfortable oak, set up, start cuttin' cacklin', raisin' a ruckus, then take a cat nap. Have gun ready when doing this. They will wake you up by cluckin' tryin' to find the hen. Remember, when they are quiet, it's likely they're comin' in, so be still and patient.

Most of the time is people doing this that causes the birds to shut up and not repond. I suggest if your not hunting dont call to the birds, Especially in the area you plan on hunting.

Wigs...this is just a place that i practice my calling because the ol' lady only allows us to watch and video the birds she doesn't allow any hunting we hunt on our own property that we dont call on at all until opening morning....so that's why we were calling....thats the place i go to watch the turkeys and their behavior and how the respond to certain calling....thanks guys!

Re: Quiet Birds....Need Some Help!

Im am by far not a turkey hunting expert, but I can tell you what works for me. The area I hunt is a medow on top of a ridge that is about 400 yards long, with my blind at one end. When they arent answering, and I know they can here my calls ( ie its not super windy), I just make sure to use my Binos, I know any bird crossing the medow will hear me, or any bird coming to my calling as to pop up in the medow.
