Re: What does deer hunting mean to you?

I'm not even sure how to explain it. Hunting in general means so much to me and my brother and dad. With me being away at school (only 2 hrs) it's the time we get to spend together doing something we all love to do. And now I've got my fiance interested after taking her in the fall and she got to see me shoot my deer during shotgun season. She's ready to get back in the woods. I must be lucky. grin.gif

Re: What does deer hunting mean to you?

Have you gazed on naked grandeur where there’s nothing else to gaze on

Set pieces and drop-curtain scenes galore

Big mountains heaved to heaven, which the blinding sunsets blazon,

Black canyons where the rapids rip and roar?

Have you swept the visioned valley with the green stream streaking through it

Searched the Vastness for something you have lost?

Have you strung your soul to silence? Then for God’s sake go and do it;

Hear the challenge, learn the lesson, pay the cost

Have you wandered in the wilderness, the sagebrush desolation

The bunch-grass levels where the cattle graze?

Have you whistled bits of rag-time at the end of all creation,

And learned to know the desert’s little ways?

Have you camped upon the foothills, have you galloped o’er the ranges

Have you roamed the arid sun-lands through and through?

Have you chummed up with the mesa? Do you know its moods and changes?

Then listen to the Wild – it’s calling you.

Have you known the Great White Silence, not a snow-gemmed twig aquiver?

(Eternal truths that shame our soothing lies)

Have you broken trail on snowshoes? Mushed your huskies up the river

Dared the unknown, led the way, and clutched the prize?

Have you marked the map’s void spaces, mingled with the mongrel races,

Felt the savage strength of brute in every thew?

And though as grim as **** the worst is, can you round it off with curses?

Then hearken to the Wild – it’s wanting you.

Have you suffered, starved and triumphed, groveled down, yet grasped at glory,

Grown bigger in the bigness of the whole?

“Done things” just for the doing, letting babblers tell the story,

Seeing through the nice veneer the naked soul?

Have you seen God in His splendors, heard the text that nature renders?

(You’ll never hear it in that family pew.)

The simple things, the true things, the silent men who do things –

Then listen to the Wild – it’s calling you.

They have cradled you in custom, they have primed you with their preaching

They have soaked you in convention through and through

They have put you in a showcase; you’re a credit to their teaching –

But can’t you hear the Wild? – it’s calling you

Let us probe the silent places, let us seek what luck betide us;

Let us journey to a lonely land I know

There’s a whisper on the night-wind, there’s a star agleam to guide us,

And the Wild is calling, calling….let us go.

Re: What does deer hunting mean to you?

To me hunting is a time to relax and just enjoy nature. To let my mind and body listen to everything that is happening around me in the rising or setting sun. I don't know what i would do with out it.

Re: What does deer hunting mean to you?

Hunting is a time to just enjoy being out there with nature and putting the rat race out of my mind completely. Enjoying sharing the outdoor experience with family and good friends. Kicking back and enjoy the stillness of the earlly morning and late evening and the beauty of another sunrise or sunset. Watch and listen to all of God's creatures going about their daily routines and enjoy the beauty of the scenery and smells of the great outdoors. That is until a deer comes along that I want to try to kill. Then the adrenline starts to flow and I go through my self control methods to not loose my cool so I can make the shot. grin.gif

Re: What does deer hunting mean to you?

Always a good question smile.gif When I was younger it meant being with friends and enjoying the outdoors.

Now, I pretty much hunt by myself, so it is getting out without the noise from everyday life. I enjoy the peace and quiet. I don't feel the need to have to kill anymore, if I do I'm still thrilled, but I can still enjoy the hunt laugh.gif Priorites seem to change as you get older crazy.gif

Re: What does deer hunting mean to you?

Deer hunting is a part of me. I wouldn't be whole without it. The time I spend hunting, scouting, hiking in new areas, shooting my bow, or guns, or just gettiing equiptment in order, are the times I live for. It is more than an addiction, it is a way of life.

Re: What does deer hunting mean to you?

Could I live without it?

Probably.

Would I want to?

No.

It's about beating the deer on his/her terms, fooling them, learning them, cheating them, predicting them.

It's about being alone.

It's about being out there, praying, thinking.

It's about sharing good times on a tailgate or leaning on a truck bed telling stories over a cup of coffee and a ssssssaaaaaaaammmmmmmmich.

It's about laying down in a nice hay field of Timothy in the warm November sun, wondering how in the heck you could have missed that easy chip shot of a 10 yard shot, and then laughing, (sort of) because you realize you're getting too wrapped up in the sport, and there are bigger things in life than shooting a deer.

But what a deer! Still can't believe I missed him. grin.gif

Re: What does deer hunting mean to you?

to me it keeps a tradition going in my family that has been going on for a very long time, gives me a chance to see some neat things other people who sit at home might not get to see, and best of all i get some meat out of the deal. grin.gif

Re: What does deer hunting mean to you?

It is here that Peace and Tranquility abound

It is here that Solitude and Serenity can be found

Standing on the summit of a high mountain peak

Majesty is found by those who will seek

Strengthening the hearts of those who are weak

I stand here and listen to Creation's glorious sound

Flying on a natural high, standing with my feet firmly on the ground

Below me is a scene fit for an Ansel Adams dream

Of a high mountain lake that glimmers and gleams

In the ray of the morning's brilliant sunbeam

The Call of The Wild

Calls to her child

"Listen and hear my song

Listen to all Creation's throng

Take heed to its words

Echoed within the songs of the birds

Listen and take comfort there in

It is here that your soul's rest will begin"

I hear the rhythm played sweet and low

As I take in the High Country's show

A male Blue plays the drum of his breast

Skillfully playing along with the Wild's Best

A pika peeps while he harvests his summer hay

And two hoary marmots whistle while they wrestle and play

A mature Bald soars high

In the endless blue of the morning's sky

And let's out a loud shrill of a cry

Sending the marmots scurrying for cover

The female first and then her lover

Wildflowers blow back and forth in the cool breeze

Waves of colour flowing in a gentle sea

A smell so lovely, so costly, so rare

Sent up to the Maker in sacred prayer

A large grizzly sow feeds in a far flowering field

Eating the best of the summer's bountiful yield

Of low bush blueberries and wild huckleberries

That grow beside the Slipper of the Fairy

Her Majesty stands up on her hinds

Sniffing the air for any danger signs

She then drops down and eats contentedly without a care

She's dark brown, mixed with black and silver tipped hair

I watch her from the safety of a distant perch

Finding the Beauty in which I search

All my senses are alert and strong

Awakened by the strum of the high country's song

A mountain bluebird lands very close to me

And eats the orange berries of a mountain ash tree

What a delicate, precious little bird

A stunning picture that cannot be captured in words

Finally I spot a group of muley bucks bedded near a stunted fir

Two of which will go over 30 for sure

Their red coats shine in the morning sun

They are well worth a stalk, so I grab my gun

As I work the stalk, I hear a bugle from a wapiti bull

His notes cover a range both high and low

The muleys get up to see what the commotion is about

As the bull lets out yet another high pitched shout

I'm pegged down by the bachelor group

But I am now close enough to shoot

I slowly edge up to a knarled tree for a rest

I jack one in, get ready and pray for the Best

The rifle echoes and the biggest one hit's the ground

While the others head over the rim in leaps and bounds

I walk up on the Giant and stand in wonder and Awe

I lift up the antlers but can't lift up my jaw

He's a monster muley with width, height and mass

And he's got gobs and gobs of trash

The chase is over, the hunt is done

The goal has been reached but the work has just begun.

I give out a prayer of 'Thanks' on the summit of a mountain peak

I know Majesty is found by those who will seek

And the Call Of the Wild

Calls to me, her child

"Listen, and hear my song

Listen to all Creation's throng

Listen and take comfort there in

In the High Country your soul's rest will begin."

Re: What does deer hunting mean to you?

Love, Passion, Heart Attack. I can' t explain it any other way. They don't make words like that. There is nothing like the night before opening morning digging all over the house and laying all my stuff out. Then getting up like it is Christmas morning, getting in that tree and relaxing, thinking, praying, talking with god and getting alot of things off my chest . Seeing that big squirrel come out from behind the tree with you beading down on him thinking he is a monster and then finally seeing one and your heart feel like it is gonna bungee jump out of my chest and I can't control my breath. OHHHHHHH man I can't wait!!!
