Ohiobucks
Any luck this fine opening morning? I ended up calling in a jake for the neighbors boy. I was hunting alone on my buddies property. My buddy has some amish neighbors that are really nice people. I was trying to get a bird that was gobbling on their property over to my buddies property. I ended up moving positions and ran across Wayne (the neighbors boy, who is about 16-17 years old), he was repositioning on the same bird as well. I told him I would call for him, so we got within 75 yards of the bird and I backed off about 50 and started with the slate call. This bird was stubborn. He gobbled at almost everything, but would not come closer. After about 30 minutes or so, I backed up a little more and racked some leaves, while purring and yelping. As soon as I sat down, Wayne shot the bird at about 35 yards. Again, it was a jake bird, 3-4" beard, nubs for spurs and about 15-17 lbs. There were birds all over first thing this morning, but the hens were pretty vocal as well. Hard (for me) to call a mature tom from a flock of hens...... Next time. Rhino
Re: Let\'s hear it Ohioans! Way to go Tom. I like the "give them the idea the hens is leaving" tactic. Works for me sometimes too.
