Greg's 2nd

I took my partner, Greg, out for his second bird of the season this morning. I had scouted a nice Tom the night before and I thought we had it made.

I set Greg up along the anticipated path of travel and we got busted or the birds were simply spooky. Couldn't figure out which.

Greg was a good sport and I took him to another good spot. No sooner had I let out a raspy call then a gobbler hollar'd back from quite a distance. The problem was he was coming in behind us.

I quickly moved Greg and the deeks to a saddle on a small ridge and just as we were about to set up I spotted the gobbler at the bottom of the hill. We backed up a few feet and I sat Greg down. I set the deeks up nice and purty and took my seat about 10 yards behind Greg.

I kicked out a putt and purr and our gobbler slammed us with a gobble. I kept it up and he did too.

Pretty soon I see Greg start to track something with his barrel and I had a pretty good idea what it might be. He steadied his aim and drove one home. Perfect shot without a pellet in the breast.

Here is his 2nd bird for the season:
