markyj987
Has anyone ever seen the Shepherd's Chapel Bible study program with Pastors Arnold Murray and Dennis Murray? I stumpled upon it by chance....just channel surfing early in the AM a couple months ago. The format of the program is pretty good, as they go line by line through Scripture and explain it. The last half hour of the show is used to answer questions. I had not heard anything controversial about them...and what they are teaching about (have been teaching from the OT) has made sense to me. However, in a quick web search, I found this church being described as a cult and the pastor as racist, etc. I haven't seen anything yet that would make me think it's a church that's way out in left field. Does anybody have some insight into this program? Maybe someone with more Biblical wisdom could make some sense of their Statement of Faith. It definitely doesn't seem outlandish or unreasonable to me. One of the accusations of Pastor Arnold Murray's church is that he teaches modalism. I'm having a tough time making sense of it....so any insight would be great.
HuntingInMaine
Re: Shepherd\'s Chapel I read their statement of faith and it seems "ok" to me. It follows the scripture, but that doesn't mean the church follows your interpretation (whatever it is) of those verses. I would look into the people who are making claims against this church and see what they believe before I formed an opinion on either one. I say go with your heart...if it feels right then great, if not...move on!
Reloader
Re: Shepherd\'s Chapel I don't know anything about this church but after reading their statments...I agree with HuntingInMaine, I agree with the statments but they may or may not interpret them the same way you or I do...One possible place that I can see someone thinking they are a cult is the section: "We believe that God chose out a special people unto Himself to be His servants and those servants were to be the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob called "Israel" (Deuteronomy 7:6; Psalm 105:6; Isaiah 44:1-2)." This could be interpreted as elitism that often singles out cults and leads to the other problems and isolationistic thinking that causes the tradgedies we hear about...that does not mean that this church will do that but it may be where the accusations are coming from. buckee
Re: Shepherd\'s Chapel Well, after doing a lot of reading and listening, I would say it's a cult. Check it out for yourself. http://www.carm.org/shepherds_chapel.htm
wtnhunt
Re: Shepherd\'s Chapel Shepards Chapel has been around a long time. Used to use the channel he was on as an identifier while programming satellites when I had to work on them, because it was always on the air. Another is I think his name is Gene Scott. Never really sat down for any length of time and watched or listened to either of them, but they both have been on the air since at least 92 and had enough funding/support to keep a satellite transponder open for that time. Guest KSNimrod
Re: Shepherd\'s Chapel We've got a little group where I live that follows the teachings of Mr. Murray. They are correctly labeled as a cult. The local "pastor" here also has a slot on our local access cable. Mimics Mr. Murray to a tee.
