Ok, before I start all the fish in this story were released, unharmed, and were never actually taken outta the water just in case anyone gets the wrong idea. grin.gif

I fish for northerns at a little dam below one of the lakes here every spring. Its been a strange year though, the northerns arent spawning well around here for some reason and a lot of them in different bodies of water are still full of eggs and not biting well confused.gif

So im down casting at the dam and not getting any bites.I know the northerns are in there because I can see them trying to swim up the damonce in awhile and jumping and swirling in the rocks at the bottom of it.

After about 2 hours Im getting disgusted and notice theres a pattern to what the fish are doing.Theyre shooting up a gap between two rocks, getting partway up the dam, and being washed back down.Theyre going through the rocks again in the same spot but only backwards.

It looks to easy to be true so I try it.I wait untill i see one shoot up through the gap, I put my net at the bottom of the rocks, and sure enough a 4 lb northern washes back into it a few minutes later.I just get done releasing it and see a bigger one try the gap, again it washes back into the net and i have a 6 lb northern in the net.Im finding this all kind of amusing but figure even if Im releasing them its probably illegal so i pick the net up and turn to walk back up the bank.I notice another northern coming through the gap.She apparently seen me as well because she turned to go back out as soon as she got through the gap.Unfourtanately for her there wasnt enough room and she gets caught sideways in the current. In her hurry to get away from me this 8-9 lb northern launches herself outta the water and lands in the rocks, on shore, right in front of me shocked.gifAfter my initial suprise I picked her up, threw her back in and got outta there before temtation got the better of me grin.gif

Re: kinda interesting

i do that with suckers all the time. Teh walleye do that around here, and i have seen some monsters spawning and going through those spots. Sure would be nice to pull one of the 10-12 pounders full of eggs out for a pic, but i obey teh law and leave the spawning fish alone. Still tempting though. smile.gif
