What kind of skull is this?

My dad and I found this skull a few weeks ago while riding the quad through brush. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Here are some pics of the unknown skull compared to the red fox skull that we have...

The unknown skull is on the left and the red fox is on the left. Some of the locals say that it is a house cat, but we don't think so.. It has too long of a snout to be a house cat. But it would also explain the condition of the teeth.

Re: What kind of skull is this?

Hmmmmmm...............Interesting

Tooth pattern almost looks like a dog, but the fang isn't hooked like a dog's.

The sagital crest, and nuchal taurus are way too small for a raccoon or oppossum.

The snout is too long for a house cat, and too big.....

Hmmmmmmmmmm

My best guess--bobcat.

I'll bet Todd can give you a better idea. crazy.gif

Either way, cool find. wink.gif

Re: What kind of skull is this?

I think it is a raccoon skull. I have several in my collection that look exactly like that and some of them came from a carcass that still had enough of the hide and body left to identify it as a raccoon.

If the one you have is a red fox, they look very similar. I am thinking that the unknown is also a red fow.

I have to back out on this statement because I totally missed the differences in the fangs. So now I have no clue.

Re: What kind of skull is this?

OK, I just went down and got a 'coon skull from our biology room.

What you have there is a coon skull with and extremely small, non-existant sagital crest.

A sagital crest is the seam that runs down the middle of the skull. The sagital crest is where the jaw muscles attach to the skull, the bigger the crest, the bigger the muscle. If you'll notice the one in the picture, it appears to be smooth.

So there you go.

For what it's worth, I'm 99% sure it's a coon skull.

Which skull are you looking at? The "sagital crest" on the skull on the right runs from the top middle down to the snout. Coyote.

Look, I defined sagital crest. Maybe I should have used the word "ridge" instead of "seam." I don't even know what picture you're looking at. I was looking at the original, unknown skull, in the first picture at the top of the thread. The one on the left I think is a raccoon, but it has no sagital crest. Most all coon skulls that I've seen have a sagital crest. The one I'm looking at right now, here on my desk, (the one I found over by the corn crib Apple Valley) has a sagital crest. The one in the first picture above does not appear to have a sagital crest, that's why I was not sure at first as to what it was.
