Tominator
There are 31 days of school left here where I teach. It happens every year......We got 2 new students today! What the heck are parents thinking? They're almost condemning them to a failing grade for the 4th quarter.
Shaun_300
Re: Just A Little Vent-- this is a pretty weird time to put your kids in school if ya ask me... Why not just wait til september? (or august if you start in august) Those kids will have to put their rears in gear if they want to pass!
TreeStandBowHunter
Re: Just A Little Vent-- Did you look at their situation first??? I know in the military, sometimes you can't help when you move. I see where your coming from though. When I was stationed in NC, my son went to a all year round school. We left there in December and came up here to where they are using a normal school calendar....but in his case, he was ahead. I mean if they just up and moved because they "Just had too", then yeah but I would look at the situation first. May have been a job offer that he HAD to jump on. May have been his house that through them off schedual. You sell your house, sometimes you don't have time to stick around depending how it played out! Guest Andrea
Re: Just A Little Vent-- Yeah, sometimes you gotta look at the circumstances. Military, they could be foster children, could have been expelled from another county, mother may have left the dad, vice-versa, you just never know. Of course, you should have access to that kind of info don't you?
carbonhunter
Re: Just A Little Vent-- But look at it from a teachers stand point...how frustraiting, I doubt any teacher wants to fail a kid(well maybe some) I'm sure i wouldnt feel about the same way. JoshM
Re: Just A Little Vent-- Yea pretty stupid.....At CHS....centerburg highschool...if get a F in a class for the 4 quarter you fail for the year in that class even if you get A's for the 1st,2nd,3rd quarter
MUDRUNNER
Re: Just A Little Vent-- It sure is tough on the kids.I went to quite a few schools growing up,and no two schools were on the same pace with each other, which made it hard to adapt too.I don't even think they used any of the same textbooks. hutchies
Re: Just A Little Vent-- Sometimes situations cannot be avoided. Hopefully the kids will work hard and the parents will help them all they can. I understand you feel like that kid has not learned anything you taught that year but you cannot hold that against them or their parents. Who knows they may have been in a bad situation and had to move to protect their kids. Just be tolerant and try to understand.

Reloader
Re: Just A Little Vent-- That is frustrating regardless of the reason...for student and teacher Im sure... I went to 6 different elementary schools 2 different middle schools and then managed to stay in only one Highschool...That was a pain but we didn't have any choice in the moves...changing schools wasn't to bad except when I changed school districts...then the curriculum changed....Moved once in end of March in 8th grade. I was in honors science doing biology and the new district was doing earth science...and it had a project due in May that had been assigned in September but they expected me to just catch it up ....bad experience there....That was due to house sale issues though so we didn't have a choice about the move. Tominator
Re: Just A Little Vent-- [ QUOTE ] Chris, are these transfer students, or some just starting school ? too_ [/ QUOTE ] Transfers Mike. [ QUOTE ] could have been expelled from another county, [/ QUOTE ] Expulsions are the worst case scenario. Essentially, we're getting someone else's baggage, that they don't want to deal with. I appreciate your comments, and like TSBH and others have said, it's not always the kids' fault, there are move ins, military personnel, housing changes, etc. but, like I said, I was just venting. I guess my point is is that it's incredibly frustrating to teach a student half a course in 33 days. I don't like using the word impossible, but in many cases, (especially the expelled students), they don't want to work. If I have a kid who even gives me half an effort, I bend over backwards to get them to succeed. Conversely, if a kid doesn't want to learn, I don't expend too much effort on them--hard as that sounds, I have 20 students that want to succeed, so I focus my efforts on them. Thanks folks. I feel better.
TreeStandBowHunter
Re: Just A Little Vent-- [ QUOTE ] Thanks folks. I feel better. [/ QUOTE ] I hope so, I could hear you from here I see what your saying though I was just saying to look at the situation. I respect teachers i'll tell you that. I think teachers are under paid for all the bullcrap they put up with with kids these days. Although, I think they need to be held accountable to a point though. I told my oldest son's teacher at the last conference, if my son behaves badly at school (he don't but just a point) then that's my problem and I will handle it, but if he can't solve that math problem and fails math class (he isin't, but again another point) then it's your fault. She didn't know what to say I couldn't do it man. It takes all my patience to teach Marines let alone a classroom full of 8 year olds. I would have them all at parade rest and doing push-ups. They might not learn much in my class, but they will be stong kids

Actually, since we've pretty much banned corporal punishment, kids know they can get away with "stuff." I've told I don't know how many students that they talk a pretty good game, and it would be nice to head down to the gym and I'll give them a choice, wrestling mat, or boxing ring, and we'll go a few rounds. If I win, you do what I say, If you win, you can be tardy, not do homework, talk out of turn, use profanity, etc. I love my job, but if I could pin or box a few "tough guys" every year, well then, I'd have the perfect job.
