After you shoot the animal with your shotgun you can typically recover all of the remaining shot when you clean and prepare it for the table. Lead is dangerous in dust form. Pieces of lead are not that dangerous (unless they are being fired at you). The other benefit of lead is when you are eating the animal, if you happen to bite down on a pellet.
