Ohio success!

Chalk one up for The Hooks! cool.gif

I was lucky enough to bag a nice Ohio eastern turkey this morning! Two of my buddies and I went out to the turkey woods early this morning while the rain came pouring down. We knew birds were in there, they always are. We got set up well before light in a known fly down area. We spread out and settled in, getting soaked with every passing minute.

We never heard a gobble, but the hens were really talking from the tree. A few flew down and went the opposite direction, taking some male birds with them. But there were still plenty birds on the roost we could see, yelping away. I made a few soft yelps with my Primos diaphram to mimic the birds we were hearing. Some hens few down to my left, almost on top of my buddy Woody. 8-10 hens within 15-20 yards of him, to his left. I made a few louder and more aggressive calls that got the hens fired up. We could still see the 4 toms in the trees, near were the hens were roosted. A few more calls, and down they flew, right to me. The bird landed 30 yards away from me, right down my gun barrel. After seeing his beard sticking out, *BAM* I let loose some #4's in his direction. He folded like a house of cards. cool.gif

The bird is 18 pounds, with a 9" beard and a pair of 1" spurs. NWTF scoring calculator says it scores a 56.

I am working on getting the pictures uploaded now. Seems the Realtree picture site is down for upgrades. I will get those up ASAP.

Re: Ohio success! * pic added *

I took my bow out this morning and hunted hard for those little buggers. I didn't hear a peep until about 11:45 this morning and figured I'd be out of luck cuz the legal shooting time stops at 12:00 noon. Well as my luck would have it all that I got was soaking wet and cold and then he showed up 15 minutes too late. Oh well! Better luck next time I guess.

Re: Ohio success!

Congrats.... I opted to hunt out of a hunting shack with a propane heater... should have just stayed in bed. never heard or seen a bird. At about 10:00 I took a walk around the property calling every now and then but never heard a thing... I certainly hope the weather is better the rest of the season... tomorrow they're calling for snow. mad.gif

Great job. Way to help the team. I haven't been on in a while, but glad to see we have a score on the board. My season starts on Monday (5/2). I've had lots of promising scouts! Later...RS
