Scent Sticks Good or Bad

I have been trying to draw a nice buck in closer to my stand with calls and apples and candy but he just stays out of range even after moving around he just seems to know when I'm there and eats the goodies after dark.. I've seen scent sticks that can be light and hung on a limb to cover human scent and intice the deer in for a closer look. The question is has anyone tried these if so do they really work or am I just adding to my problem of scent control ?? Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated...

P.S. ... He will answer my game calls but just won't leave the thick stuff...
