Guest bronco_mudder
My shooting partner bought a Handi Rifle in .22 hornet, and its a great little shooter. He has found that after 2 reloads it won't eject the cases, unless he full sizes them. The first time he got a case stuck, it was winter, and we summed it up to things being cold, because when we got back from the range and removed the case and tried it again it would eject it no problem. Now that it is warmer, it did it again, so we thought it might be a length problem, but the cases were within the limit. Full sizing has seemed to clear up the problem, but when I buy a single shot, or bolt rifle, I would want to be able to neck size more than a couple of times before having to full size the cases, sort of disapointing. I was wondering if anyone else has found this a problem with their Handi rifles? Or is it a problem with the rifle, or maybe the design of Hornet cases? johnf
Re: H&R Handi Rifle Question I have a 243 handi & 25-06 ultra rifle. I have never had that problem with the 25, but have with the 243. The problem is that if there is dirt or dust in the reciever it will stick or if there is too much lube on the shell it will stick. When I'm at the range I keep my cleaning rod handy and swab with a dry cloth about every 4 or 5 shots.
AJ
Re: H&R Handi Rifle Question I have a few Handi Rifles with a few different barrels. One of which is the 22 Hornet. It shot respectable as is but I opened it up to K-Hornet. The brass lasts longer this way. Anyhow, your problem is a common one with the Handi Rifles. It can be overcome by polishing the chamber slightly. Since the guns use an ejector and not a mechanical extractor, there is not a lot of camming force to extract the empty cartridges. If the case to chamber wall tension is greater than the ejector's spring power, it will not eject. I have used a carbon arrow shaft and cut a slot with a cutoff wheel or hacksaw and inserted a strip of 400 grit sandpaper. I add some cutting oil and insert it in the chamber and polish the chamber walls. Do not polish any farther than the shoulder. I have followed this up with Flitz and the problem went away. 7th
Re: H&R Handi Rifle Question My 7 year old son has one in the .223 and I have never seen anything go wrong with it. It is a great shoter (even with him shooting it, last time at the range he shot 14 rounds inside of 2" at 100 yds with it.)
