Guest BeerSlayer1
HiawathaSk is curious about what I saw when I was elk hunting in his area some years back. Here's the story. It was back in 91 and my brother and I had been drawn for elk near Greenwater. Opening morning saw us start our hunt west of the park a few miles along the Red Deer River where we had seen lot's of sign previously. We split up and after about fifteen minutes I heard the most awful sort of a bawling, howling, moan coming from near the river. I've never heard any animal make a sound like that and figured it must be one that was really suffering. I was thinking a wounded bear or something. When I got to the river, I saw what was making the noise. A poor white-tailed doe had stepped into the river for a drink and had sunk up past her belly in river silt. A coyote had come upon her and had jumped from the shore onto her back. The coyote was standing on the deer's back and had ripped the doe's hide off of one back haunch and was pulling flesh off - eating the poor thing while it was still alive. I took a moment to think about what I should do. I didn't want to shoot the coyote because he was just doing what comes naturally. The humane thing to do would be to finish off the doe but before I could, the coyote grabbed it by the throat and did the deed for me. Any time someone starts talking about how cruel hunting is, I tell that story and point out how cruel good old Mother Nature can be.
