Good luck with the new toy! Your ultra kicks about the same as a 300WBY depending on rifle weight. A healthy shove.........but more than manageable. You are well armed for deer........and elk.........and moose........and griz grin.gif And I guess even rabbits if the opportunity presents itself wink.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif LOL

Re: 300 rum

I also have the Model 700 LSS in .300 Ultra Mag. I like mine very well. I disagree with all of the negative comments that you have heard. The recoil is not all that bad. Accuracy is great. Even though it has 13% more powder capacity than the .300 Weatherby, as factory loaded it burns about the same amount of powder as the Weatherby. It is the most powerful .300 Magnum commercially loaded in the $30-$40 dollar a box price range. Now the 7.82 Lazzeroni Warbird and the 30-378 Weatherby might be more powerful but ammo is close to $100.00 dollars a box, and they are much more OVERBORE than the Remington Ultra Mag. Great cartridge in my opinion.

Re: 300 rum

The way I view the big 30s is that they are primarily long-range calibers. They each add range on top of the already adequate 30-06 & 308 for big game. So to that end……..the rifles that they are in need to be very accurate to take advantage of these gains. 1 MOA is the worst I’d want any long range gun to perform. And I’d prefer .5 MOA for 3 shots from a bench. Field shooting adds in many more variables so I want al the bench accuracy I can get to start. That way when those 300+400+500 yard shots present themselves you have a rifle that is capable of taking advantage of the added energy & flatter trajectory.

Now for the BIG variable. Is the shooter capable of taking advantage of this added ranging ability? Flat out, most aren’t. It takes practice at long range with the rifle and load………from field positions to become proficient. Without this, a person would be better off with the plain old 308 or 06. Just having a long range rifle does not make someone a long range marksman.

I am not pointing at anyone with these comments. But am just making a point. If the muzzle break allows someone to practice more than that is the way to go. As would be reloading to help off set the expense of practice. But given this dedication……..the big 30s are great rounds.

Re: 300 rum

IB, after been through 3 sniper schools and having a Green Beret sniper for a Dad growing up, you have said the best thing that I have every seen in print. I have at my sign out, a M-82 Baret and to set here and say that I would even take it to the range, let alone on a mission, is total missery. I will go down range with the M-24 and leave the .50 cal at home. The other sniper on my team said the same thing. We go down range the .50 stays home.

I will say this, if you plan on shooting 400 M then set things up to shoot 600 M so you know how to shoot at that range.

Frank.

Re: 300 rum

I also agree that the gun doesnt make the marksman. But the equipment is half the battle. The best Marksmen in the world couldn't shoot nearly as accurate without top notch equipment. Not just the Rifle and Ammo but the Scope also makes a big difference in long range marksmanship. That is why tactical scopes were created. You won't see many, if any, stock factory rifles with sporter weight barrels and standard 3X9X40 scopes at a 1000 yard match shoot. But you will see some .300 Magnums.

I will disagree with this. Benchrest shooting at the 1000 yard line is not hunting. They do not even come close. I can build a Palma worthy gun and put it in the hands of an inexperienced shooter and they can't shoot groups at 400 yards let alone 600 or farther. A great shooter that can dope the wind with a 1 MOA gun is better off than a untrained shooter with a 1/4 MOA gun.

Re: 300 rum

I have been toting the Remington 700 LSS 300 Ultra Mag threw the deer woods for 3 years now.

Great gun and definately reaches out there and puts the smack down on anything I have shot at.

I agree to saying I disagree with all the negs you have been told. The negatives are just a way for some that can't handle it justify why they can't handle it. LOL

I have mine bare too. Well its got a nice Leupold VarXIII 3.5-10x50scope, but no muzzle brake or butt pad other then the factory pad.

I am somewhat heafty, short and stocky, so the recoil does not bother me one bit.

Re: 300 rum

AJ, it is true that a novice shooter wouldn't be able to take advantage of a rifle made for long range shooting. Experienced shooters and hunters that encounter long range shots will want to use a rifle, scope, cartridge capable of doing the job. That is the point I am trying to make. Maybe I shouldn't have used 1000 yard benchrest shooting as an example. Kenny Jarrett is a hunter, He designed his "Beanfield Rifle" for long range hunting. David Miller makes his own rifles for Coues deer hunting. He routinely makes 500-600 Yard shots on little Coues deer. Kenny Jarrett uses the .300 Jarrett cartridge which is the 8mm Rem. Mag. necked down to .30 cal. David Miller likes the .300 Weatherby Mag. These cartridges are in the same performance catogory with the .300 Ultra Mag. These men designed and built these rifles because they wanted every advantage they could get. David Miller even makes his own scope mounts. They also use scopes designed for long range shots on game animals. These guys are both great rifle shots, but the equipment they use help them make those long range shots on game.
