What deals have gotten away from you?

Recommended Posts

What guns did you look at but hesitate to buy, then decided to get them only to find out that they had been sold?

I was looking at a beautiful older LH Sako deluxe 270 a few years back. An incredible stock in English walnut, very accurate & it came with a 3-9 Leupold VariX-II. This was in the late 90s & it could have been mine for $700. Not cheap, but a great deal. I hesitated for a week before deciding to buy it. When I got back to the shop..........it was SOLD tongue.gif I still do not own a Sako. Or a 270.

Saw a similar set-up in a shop the other day except caliber was 30-06. Price....$1200. You could have nearly doubled your money by now.

Re: What deals have gotten away from you?

A local shop (years back) had a Colt Delta Elite S/S 10MM new in the box for about $500. I didn't bite. Now a good used one starts around a grand.

Last winter I had a N.I.B. Browning A-Bolt Medallion .375 H&H in my hands. Coulda been mine for $600. I couldn't see scratching up a gun that pretty in the woods. Wasn't bad money for that gun, though.

Re: What deals have gotten away from you?

I stopped by a local shop several years ago and came across a 1958 vintage Winchester model 70 chambered in .375 H&H. The gun was in perfect condition and came with the original 5 boxes of ammo of which 15 rounds had been fired. It could have been mine for $800.

At the time I just couldn't justify why I needed to own that rifle. After several days of pondering I called to see if it was still available and sure as shinola it was gone.

Oh well........maybe next time.....

Re: What deals have gotten away from you?

Here's one that didn't get away...

About 12 years ago I decided that I wanted to go with an O/U shotgun instead of the old trusty 870 I'd shot for the past 15 years. I'd shot a friend's Winchester 101 and absolutely loved it, so I was looking for a used one since they hadn't made them for quite a while. I found a couple in gunshops that really looked used for around $700 - $800, but I couldn't find anything that I thought was a bargain. One day I was in another town and stopped in at the local gunshop. I was looking at the shotguns and the owner comes over and asks me if I need any help. I nonchalantly mention that I'm looking for a 101. He stops and thinks for a minute, then says "I think I've got one in the back." Well, he disappears into the back and I'm waiting for him to come out with another old beat up version of a 101. He comes back and is carrying a factory box with about a half inch of dust on it. He opens the box and there's a BRAND NEW 101 in it!!! Holy Cow, I'm thinking he's going to want $1500 - $2000 for it, but I've got to have it regardless of cost. I looked it over and finally asked him "How much?" "I'll take $1000 for it and throw in a case of shells" he says. You could have knocked me over with a feather. I couldn't get my check book out fast enough to pay for it.

I still have the shotgun today and it's still my absolute, #1 favorite!!! grin.gif

Several years ago I found a Ruger Red Label, 12 ga, 30 inch barrels at a store going out of business...They wanted $465 for it...I passed.

If I found one now for under a grand, I'd pass out.

Re: What deals have gotten away from you?

I was in Walmart last December just before Christmas. There was a Thompson Center Omega .50 Caliber muzzleloader with Realtree Hardwoods Synthetic stock and blue steel for $260.00 dollars. I started to buy the rifle but for some reason just didn't. After sleeping on it over night, I decided to go back the next afternoon and buy the rifle. When I got to the store there was a gentleman filling out the paper work on the Omega. I went over to the gun rack where the Omega was and the price had been marked down to $215.00 dollars. I couldn't believe my eyes. The gun basically sold for half price. That same gun lists for around $400.00 dollars everywhere else. I could really kick myself for that one.

Re: What deals have gotten away from you?

I was at a gun show in the early 90's. I went by a dealer that had an Ex. Cond. Belgium Browning model 61 still in the velvet case for $560. I really liked the gun but was on a mission for something different that I had to buy. Always regretted not buying it since then.

Re: What deals have gotten away from you?

One that did not get away was my Ruger No. 1. I was thinking that 595.00 was good and watched it for almost a year. I visited the shop late last year and they dropped the price to 495.00 so I bought it.

Sometimes waiting is good. I love the rifle.

A Rem 788 in 6mm rem for $300. It was in outstanding condition.

Those 788's are worth more now than when they were new due to being real tack drivers.
