maytom
Last year I had this same senerio pan out about 4-5 times!! Face it, there are a lot of jerks in the woods, and ethic's go right out the window when a gobble rings out. That's why I stopped going out on opening day and the weekends if I can help it. I now prefer to hit the woods during the week, when most guys are at work!! It's tuff enough at times dealing just with all the hens, yet alone some idiot hunters who intentially try to cut you off!! carbonhunter
Re: 1st day ruined by unethical hunters Couple of questions? Would you have been happier if they hadnt ignored you and had come over to chat it up?? Was this bird still hot when they walked by or was it silent?? Public Land?? The reason I ask is this, the guy saw you and walked away, im guessing headed deeper into the woods? I have had mushroom hunters walk within 15 feet of me set up and had no idea i was there, they saw you but did they know your son was there? If they didnt see your son, and the bird was silent then they could have just been walking away from you. I understand getting ticked in a situation like that, heck you see it all the time duck hunting around here, guys will set up-wind of you to get to birds working into your set. These guys could have new hunters who had no idea that that "owl hoot" was more than just that. As our we lose our lands we hunt on these type of situations are on the rise (wisconsen tragedy) I also can only hunt one day a week due to work and school, and have had this type of thing happen before, there is no reason to get pissed about it because these things will happen on public land. What saddens me is you see the "unethical hunter" stories on web sites everywhere...90% of the time ethics has nothing to do with it and its just a mis-understanding. Forget Peta and all the other freak groups out there, we as hunter will be our own downfall through this attitude I remember being a newbi at this game(still am) and there was nothing I hated more than the "pro" yelling or cursing at ya for makeing an honest mistake. We all make them, all we can do is learn from them. I was always willing to listen to a leacture on what i did wrong, but if the guy was a smart*** or just started yelling, they'd get the middle bird and a cold shoulder, because they are just makeing the problem worse. This isnt ment to be a bash on you good sir, its a subject I've though about a bit, and this post just brought it up again, so i figured id give my thoughts. Good luck to you and your son the rest of the season. Hope you each get your bird.
