My wife & I have been after this bird for the past couple seasons. We missed him last year & he was call shy. Now the story.

Last weekend, we are down by the San Jaun River---back east you would call it a Big Creek. This bird is roosted in the ponderosa pine on the other bank. I talk to him before daylight & he is gobbling his head off. Then he's quite. We see him fly across the river to our side & lands about 150 yards from us. OH BOY--I thought . Dangest thing--he gobbles & walks straight away from us. He goes down to a bend in the river & struts & gobbles on that point for 45 minutes. We can see him the whole time----What a site--him all puffed out & gobbling his fool head off. Then he comes back to us----we can see him coming down the old R-R grade. He gives to about 100 yards climbs up the enbankment & flies over to the ponderosa.

OK--I think we'll setup tomorrow AM on that point !! We got rained out.

This Saturday----we set up on that point & have a couple decoys out. He's gobbling in the pines again. We see him fly over & land in the same spot as last weekend. OH BOY--he should be headed out way. WRONG---we went straight away---downriver to the next bend & started to strut & gobble. shocked.gifshocked.gif

This morning---we set up right where he lands & takes off from. I set out 2 decoys & used an old alumiumator call from Quaker Boy--that I have but don't use it much anymore. I only use it a couple times & REAL soft. Then a couple soft yelps on my box call. My wifes sees him come off the poderosa & glides straight to the decoy. He lands--right next to the jake decoy. She takes the top of his head off at 20 yards. He weighed 17 1/2 lbs. 9" beard--1" spurs.

It's the most unbelievable turkey hunt I've ever been on. laugh.giflaugh.gif

This is the 2nd gobbler she has killed that has flown into the decoys. Unbelievable.
