rossman
I went out opening morning and did not hear one gobble, or see any birds. The area I hunt is loaded with birds. Last year we would see anywhere between 2-15 legal birds in the mornings. Yesterday, we did not even hear a bird. Just want to know if any other NY's, especially hunters in Oneida County, has had any luck!!!! Maybe it was the weather that kept the birds down!!!! Turkeygirl
Re: How are other NY\'s doing? I'm in Allegany county. except for having a hen calling after fly down but not coming to the field, I heard no gobbles either. If I feel well tonight, might take a walk up to the woods. Hopefulyl after tomorrow, I can find a tom to fill my tag, got 6 days off before may term classes.
western NY bowhunter
Re: How are other NY\'s doing? I can honestly say that its been the best start to season that I can recall in a number of years here in my neck of the woods in NE Steuben County. So far we've taken 6 gobblers in the family (counting the 2 jakes that I called in for my cousins last weekend during youth season) including 4 nice longbeards today and yesterday...22 lbs., 9" beard, .75" spurs; 21 lbs., 9" beard, 1" spurs; 19.5 lbs., 9.25" beard, 1.125" spurs; 19 lbs., 9.75" beard, 1.125" spurs. I've heard of a bunch of friends of mine taking birds in the area too. I haven't killed one yet, although I could have taken the 22 pounder that my little brother got yesterday and I also passsd up a big jake. Me and my dad have been working on a stubborn ole' 3+ yr. old for the past couple of mornings. He's a loud mouth that has gobbled 50+ times both mornings and he's come pretty close to taking a load of Winchester #6's a couple of times...but not quite close enough. He's just too nice of a bird to chance it on at 45-50 yds. Maybe his luck will run out tomorrow morning. Good luck to the rest of you NY'ers out there...there's still plenty of season left! MrWiggely
Re: How are other NY\'s doing? I called in a nice longbeard yesterday and my buddy missed at 25 yards. (Wish I could figure out how he did this). Worked a second bird in from well over 300 yards out and he skirted us and we never got a shot. Today We sat in the snow and rain and heard 1 bird give us 2 gobbles all morning. Left the woods and he was strutting in the field with 4 hens. Tommorow - Remains to be seen. Guest DaHunter
Re: How are other NY\'s doing? I live in madison county so we are pretty close, i have noticed hard gobbling on roost but when they hit the ground they shutup! My family has had decent luck only bagged a jake but my dad and brother missed monsters. We have just been getting the birds scared off by other hunters or coyotes! thats what happened too me this morning.
western NY bowhunter
Re: How are other NY\'s doing? Dahunter: You guys in Madison County have some pretty darn good turkey hunting out there. I attended SUNY Morrisville for 2 years and did alot of hunting on a couple of farms in the town of Eaton and a little bit in Nelson too. I actually killed my first ever spring longbeard in Eaton several years ago. I also missed a couple more nice ones and called a few nice ones in for friends too. It was some of the best turkey hunting that I've ever experienced. The birds didn't seemed to get pressured on the farms that I hunted as much as they do around here. I'd sure like to get back out that way and do more gobbler hunting one of these days. Good luck.
Guest Squirrelbuster
Re: How are other NY\'s doing? I was out yesterday and today with poor results. Yesterday all I saw was 3 hens ( 2 of which I kicked up while walking), and I heard about 3 gobbles but none would work in to me. Today I heard about 3 gobbles and once again none of the birds would work into me. I didn't even see any hens today.
