Getting Started

I am wanting to get a muzzleloader to take advantage of the earlier seasons on whitetail but my dad says all the powder and primers are too dangerous. How dangerous is it and what precautions should I take? Also can you reccomend any starter guns?

Re: Getting Started

CVA and Traditions are the least expensive of most of them. I would think you probably want to stay with an inline ignition. They are real safe and easier to keep clean. And, as far as safety goes, common sense comes in to play. Any powder can be hazerdous if not taking care of. You need to pay attention when loading so you do not double load your powder or put more in than recommended. Each muzzleloader comes with an instruction manual, read it well and understand it, and nothing will go wrong smile.gif

Re: Getting Started

I would get a Black Diamond starter kit. For the money they are great. A mz is not much more dangerous than any other gun. You just have to "think" a little more about what your doing. Be carefull and your all set. Click here to see the kit I am talking about.

Re: Getting Started

The T/C Black Diamond is a good gun for beginers and wxperiencd shooter as well. I have one and love it. Get the starter kit though. I would go with 209 primers and and pyrodex or 777 pellets as they are easier and less messy to work with. As long as you keep them dry you can store them like shotgun shells.

Re: Getting Started

The T/C Black Diamond in .50 caliber is a GREAT Deer Gun!! I "Flat-Lined" two Deer with mine last fall with two shots. Most accurate load, in my Diamond, is: 90.0 Grs (Volume) "777" FFG behind a .452" saboted (Hi-Pressure) Hornady 250 grain XTP fired by a 209. primer.

Re: Getting Started

Well, I got a new cabelas gift catalog today. Theres a Knight Disc Elite for $300 OFF. In other words, you can get yourself a $500 gun for only $200. Right now, I wish I had the money to buy one.

Muzzleloaders aren't anymore dangerous than any other guns, as long as you are careful with them. They are very fun to shoot and can be extremely accurate.

Re: Getting Started

I know that this is exstream but last year (at a reenactment) a friend of mine blew powder in his hand and face from the way he was loading. If you are loading and have the time let it set a min before doing so but do not take the cap off!!!! This will let air (read O2) back into the bore (that was used on the last shot) and if there is still a hot one in there, will set off the powder.

Black powder is not lile smokeless, it will flash, instead of burn.

Yes, this is not what we do as hunter but something to look at. This is a great sport and I have been in it the last 30 years, just be worned, it is addickdiv.

Oh ya, shooting Yanks (or Rebs if you are into Blue.) is a rush.

gess you can tell I am in to the side locks myself but my son has a .54 in line. Just get out and have fun.
