Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Box call or mouth call? Both work. I use a box call & my buddy uses a mouth diaphragm call. We have killed gobblers using both calls combined & alone. I can't make a diaphragm sound good----so I use a box almost exclusively---A Quaker Boy-"Grand Ole Master or A Lynch 101--Fool Proof 1 sider. Both work well. A mouth diaphragm has a big advantage----NO MOVEMENT to make the call work. Also in some people's opinion it sounds more realistic. Box call are a little easier to master--IMO. Get them both. Gus
Re: Box call or mouth call? I usually use a box call when trying to find a bird, but when I get set up and ready for the bird to come on in I switch to the mouth call. I have used the same one this year and called in 2 birds for myself and 3 for other friends.
Guest TheDanishDanger
Re: Box call or mouth call? thanks for all the advice, yeah i think i'm stickin with the diaphram call, just because of the lack of movement, thanks again for all the help
Strut10
Re: Box call or mouth call? Learn to use both. There are times and situations when one will be way more useful than the other. And while you're practicing........get a slate or glass call and learn that one, too. Never hurts to be able to run 'em all.
magnatecsteve
Re: Box call or mouth call? There are certain times when each different call will work best. I LOVE diaphragm calls, but when a tom doesn't come in to one call, it's good to switch calls on him. My favorites go like this..diaphragm, slate, box, tube. CamoGuy
Re: Box call or mouth call? The box call is much easier for a beginner to use. I only recomend a mouth call if you have time to practice. I killed my first 3 birds with a box call and I never go in the woods without one.
iron buck
Re: Box call or mouth call? I also can not use a mouth call. I have tried many times...........and sound HORRIBLE! So I stick with box & slate type calls.
VTbowman
Re: Box call or mouth call? Friction calls (slate and box) of all sorts work great. As do mouth calls. The beni to a mouth call is hands free and no movement. I think every turkey hunter has an assortment of each because sometimes only one will get a turkey to come in for a closer look. For just starting out it seemed to me that the box was the easiest to learn. JMO
redbeard
Re: Box call or mouth call? Box will be the easiest for ya probably but the very easiest is a trough slate call. Primos Super Slate to be exact. PM me if you want one right. Mahogany and hickory peg. Sounds awesome and easy to play. It's what I started out with 19 years ago. LifeNRA
Re: Box call or mouth call? Like Strut10 said, learn to use them all! Then you will be ready for whatever you run into!
Guest Yotey
Re: Box call or mouth call? Use the one the birds are responding to. Add a slate call to your mixed bag and you may stuff more turkey's in your vest. Good Luck Yotey
