I was drivin on the road the other day and I looked into a field and saw three deer feeding. I saw a white thing and i thought it was a post, but it was a deer! it was pure white Albino. I couldn't believe what i was seeing. It was amazing. Not everyday you see one of those. Anyone know why this happens?

Re: Albino deer!

The deer may not have been a real albino. NY has a herd of deer that are residents of a deserted military base that is still fenced in. A significant percentage of those deer are completely white, but are not albinos. Apparently, all wild deer have a recessive gene for white colors. This is usually the reason for white and piebald deer. Although I have never seen it stated, I would suspect that inbreeding may be the cause for this gene to manifest itself.

True albinism is generally shown by the pink eyes, the translucent hooves, and other features that show a lack of coloration. The white deer of NY are basically a white phase of deer coat coloration, but the eyes and hooves have the normal coloration as do any normal deer.

There is also a much more rare deer color that is black. Now those are really weird looking. I have only seen pictures of those. I'll tell you some of these color variations could really cause a hunter to wonder exactly what he is looking at. I remember when my son shot a piebald buck (brown & white mix), he said that the first thought that ran through his mind when he spotted it at a distance was that it was some farmer's goat that had gotten loose ......lol.

haha thanks, that's good information, I wish i could get a picture of it but i doubt i'll see it again, i don't even have permission to go on the land so i'll just have to hope one walks by my stand, then i'll have plenty of pictures. Thanks for the info.
