HuntnMa
i'm not one of the Gents, but i'll give you my opinion...if you hear them fly down, i'd start callin, softly......i would stick to the locator calls before that..i always eard an owl in the a.m. and a crow in the afternoon, but after hunting this season, i have to say, they reacted to the crows when it was still dark and wouldnt respond to the owl.......good luck...... HeviShot
Re: How early do you call to the toms? I tree call to them very softly just to see how they react. This also helps to find out where the hens are if any.If you tree call to a bird and he responds back or cuts you off be quiet and get ready.I usually don't call until I hear a crow or a hen. Gus
Re: How early do you call to the toms? I don't make a sound until I hear the first tom gobbles. Then I make a few soft calls to him to let him know where I am, then just depends on how he reacts to what I do next.
Strut10
Re: How early do you call to the toms? [ QUOTE ] Gents, I am curious to know how early everyone starts calling to those gibblers while they are still on the roost and being vocal. [/ QUOTE ] Depends on the situation. Usually I will wait until the real hens start to tree call then mimic them a bit.......then go quiet 'til flydown. [ QUOTE ] Is it wrong to call to them a bit to get them heading in your direction when they fly down? [/ QUOTE ] No. Not unless the particular bird(s) you're working have shown a dislike for it in the past..........like the ones I'm going to try to kill when I leave the house here in about 10 minutes. iron buck
Re: How early do you call to the toms? I ususally call a bit while they are on roost. I like to get them thinking about heading my way before they fly down. Mostly because the property I hunt is tight & if they fly the other way (private property) my hunt is over. This method has worked well for me in the past. I'll see how well it will work in the future LOL
magnatecsteve
Re: How early do you call to the toms? Yeah, soft tree calling while still on the roost to let him think there's a hen to fly down to. One year I had a hen right next to a hot gobbler that was getting real aggressive at my calling. I tried to out-do her but it didn't work. I think the hen even purpously flew down the opposite way just to lead the tom away because the birds usually flew down to the same area from those trees....except for that morning. Rhino
Re: How early do you call to the toms? I prefer to wait till they fly down myself. If you call to a bird that's still in the tree sometimes you will pin him there trying to look for you from his elevated position. Remember he's gobbling to call hens to come to him. On rare occasions I will give one a soft tree yelp when the set up is right but far more often than not I'll wait till their feet are on the ground. VTbowman
Re: How early do you call to the toms? On one hand I can see the reasoning about calling to them while still roosted to get them to fly down towards you. On the other hand, Rhino makes an excellent point about them hanging up there trying to locate you. If your to close your busted before the evn come down. Thing is you won't know until you have wasted time waiting for them... Ok so now I know just what to do......... Yea right... D-oh!
