Guest ronin
Anyone have experience with this round? I will be receiving one soon and I was hoping to get a little feedback on performance and handloads.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: 243 WSSM Keep us posted on the results. I'm considering buying one for my girlfriend to deer hunt with next season.
too_pointer
Re: 243 WSSM I also am interested. I wonder if that round would make a good deer-varmint catridge ?? too_
Guest lilcrackshot
Re: 243 WSSM Have heard some things about. For one I heard the barrel life isn't as great as if you went with lets say a regular 243.

Guest ronin
Re: 243 WSSM I like the ability to switch back and forth from yote to deer hunting with a simple bullet change. My buddy took a deer with his 6mm last fall and dropped it in it's tracks. I'm pretty confident a proper bullet will be fine for our Columbian black tails and adding the extra wssm uumph probably won't hurt either. I ordered a browning A-bolt. Guest ronin
Re: 243 WSSM The yote/deer combo is just what I was thinking of. The write-ups I did see really drove that point home.
too_pointer
Re: 243 WSSM Do you think changing from a smaller varmint bullet to a heavier deer bullet affects the trajectory much ? I wonder if you need to re-sight from each one too_
Strut_Buster
Re: 243 WSSM I never had a huge problem with my regular 243 shooting 100gr. then 55gr. Maybe its just me. They shot identical at 100 yards.. maybe further out it may make a difference.
Guest J_Owens_66
Re: 243 WSSM I agree with stut_buster. I shoot 100 & 95 grainers out of my .243 Winchester (regular, not the WSSM) and shoot 55 grain hollow points out of it for my varmint purposes. They are both about the same, the 55 grain has a slightly higher velocity, but would still be suitable for a yote hunting. Now if you are going after groundhogs at 5 and 6 hundred yards, then you would need to sight in for maximum accuracy.
Guest ronin
Re: 243 WSSM Good to know. It will be interesting to see what this thing does! I'm scope shopping right now.
iron buck
Re: 243 WSSM Given the choice between the 243 Winchester & the 243 WSSM I'd opt for the old stand by & original 243. It would do all I'd need of a 243 bullet with room to spare. And the ammo is WAY cheaper!
AJ
Re: 243 WSSM You got that right Iron Buck! If you handload, the difference between the 243 WSSM and the .243 Win is nil. Even closer is the 6mm Rem and the 243 WSSM. Its just another old cartridge performing in a new wrapper. While it is always fun to get a new gun, don't choose this cartridge and expect miracles from this cartridge that have not been happening for decades already. It does have the benefit of using an even shorter action in the Win and Browning guns.

Strut_Buster
Re: 243 WSSM Better yet, you can reload the 243 WSSM and get even better results than you could with the 243, possibly makin it hotter than the 6mm. Whoosh.. wind is put back in
AJ
Re: 243 WSSM [ QUOTE ] Better yet, you can reload the 243 WSSM and get even better results than you could with the 243, possibly makin it hotter than the 6mm. Whoosh.. wind is put back in [/ QUOTE ] that woosh is just a puff of hot air. Oh yeah, look at all that reloading data that exceeds the 6mm Rem. Hornady has data in their Volume 6 but its not above the 6mm Rem. Hodgdon does not list any data that is above 6mm Rem or very popular wildcat the 6mm/284 (which the WSSM will not beat anyway). In the .24 calber guns, I know a bit about them. I shoot the .243 Win, 6mm Rem, 6mm Rem Ackley Improved, and the 6mm/06 Improved. I can see first hand what the different case capacities actual performance deltas are.
