Anyway, deer stomping, it is theorized that it serves a few purposes: the sound warns other deer, and there's a gland called an interdigital gland between their hooves that sends out an olfactory warning. The stomping is to try to scare you and get you to move to help them figure out what you are when they are uncertain. The blowing is to pretty well warn other deer in the area, and sometimes also is an attempt to try to scare off what they think is not right in the area. When the head gets going side to side and up and down in an attempt to figure out what you are, if you even flinch that close they got you pegged. Deer have only 3 main senses. Hearing (decent), Sight (decent), Smell (excellent). They need 2 of the 3 senses to get completely spooked. In this case they only had the smell on you and really couldn't figure out what was going on. As wtnhunt said, the stomping was to get you to jump or move so they could positively ID you.
