What is going on!?

I went out this morning and still did not hear any gobbles. There was a set of turkey tracks over yesterday's boot prints so a turkey came through sometime yesterday but I spooked a turkey walking out today that may be a lone hen wandering around. I'm going out later and going to sit where I saw that gobbler 2 weekends ago and see if he is hanging out in that area. I am so confused as to why the turkeys aren't gobbling at all. And they started logging on the other side of my hunting area so that means not hunting that spot. Some of youi n NY are hearing gobbles but in my area, not a thing..........any ideas?

Re: What is going on!?

I went hunting Tuesday near Bristol Mountain off route 64. Heard one gobble early. Walked up on a hen later that morning - I think she went to nest early as she was on the ground and I was only about 30 yds away - no gobblers in site.

I think the lack of gobbling may be due to the cold spring we are having so far.

I also hunt near you TG in Allegahny county. Same thing there on opening day, only more hens and some shooting.

Re: What is going on!?

I've been out three times and heard two gobbles. It seems, where I hunt, they start gobbling more as the season goes on, with maximum gobbling the last week. I hunt up on Paris Hill, off route 12 south!!!

They will start gobbling, be patient. Just because they are not gobbling does not mean they will not come in to your call. They will come in silent, especially if they know your location!!

Last year, I was calling and heard one gobble off in the distance. Next thing I know, there is a Tom standing 30 yards to my left. He saw me first. So no shot.

Hey rossman i drive over paris hill every weekday how far off 12 are you hunting i was thinking about asking that farmer by the truck pullover too hunt, theres usually some there. Around my area i have heard quite alot of gobbling from certain birds and as little as 8-10 gobbles from one.

Re: What is going on!?

Hens on the nest early? Maybe this explains how I nearly walked up on a hen on Tuesday. It was only about 9:00 am and the bird was in heavy cover about 30 yds away before she began to yelp - I couldn't see her, but heard her run off.

Re: What is going on!?

Went out yesterday morning afetr hearing some turkeys scratching in the leaves the night before. Well those darn turkeys flew down and were in a field right above me. I found out because I walked up there later and found there tracks, poop, and scratchings. The poop looked more like hen if that is how you judge a hen from a gobbler, lol, but who knows. Yeah,I've been wondering if the gobblers aren't behind in gobbling or something, maybe that cold weatehr and snow we had turned them off. Any way, I slept in this morning, too tired to go out but I will be out in the morning. Good luck to the rest of you. Hey BuckNRut, where do you hunt in Allegany County?

Good luck outdoorgirl, get one for me,lol! I went out this morning, heard nothing. Went back home and slept for a few hours, lol. I am going to go out in the morning, hopefully hear something but who knows. I did find a few turkey feathers by a fox den which indicates to me the foxes are really hurting the turkey population, not just my mom's chickens. By the way outdoorgirl, I named my bird "Hoops",lol!
