Loosing intrest in NASCAR

I dunno whats up with me, but lately I just have not been into Nascar as much as I use to be. Missing a race would kill me. Now it's ok if I miss one and I hardley ever watch the bush races anymore. Heck I never missed a bush race live when I was down in VA back in the 80's. between Langley raceway and Martinsville they had my name on a seat I was so regular.

It was nothing back then to go down into pits after the race and talk to the drivers and crew. Heck you even got invited out to dinner after the race by some of the drivers. Now thats all changed.

I dunno what it is but some of it has to do with the major changes going on in Nascar these days. The Mexican Bush race was a kicker in the butt. Back in the 70's and 80's, if you ever mentioned such a race you would have tared and feathered by the boys from the deep south.

I'm just not as drawn to nascar anymore like I was once. I will tell you some of the lesser known series Arca, World Of Outlaws, Hooters, USAC are grabbing my attention more everyday.

Nascar seems to be too scripted these days and the drivers have changed in a big way. The Tv broadcasts have plumted in qaulity and coverage. Just watch an ESPN classic race and you will see what I mean.

You're right. Since FOX/NBC has gotten the media rights, it's gone downhill significantly. Just give it another 10 years, I probably won't be as into it either. It's going to be real Hollywood then. It's really losing it's redneck appeal. frown.gif Seems like its going more to suits, ties and martinies (sp) instead of flannel, Skoal and beer. grin.gif Glad we got local dirt tracks. cool.gif

DITTO!You guys are right,it just isn't what it used to be.I do still watch just about every race, but I rarely watch it from start to finish. There are to many robots in NASCAR that seems to have taken some of the fun out of it.I do love dirt racing!Especially modifieds and late models.I have traveled to Florida,Georgia and Ohio twice for dirt races, and and go to every dirt track within 60 miles of my house pretty regularly.Dirt racing will ALWAYS be flannel,Skoal and beer. wink.gif

Re: Loosing intrest in NASCAR

Welcome to the club! I had been losing interest for a few years, then after Daytona '01 I can count the number of races I've watched on 1 hand. For me, it's not really the coverage as much as it is the fans. Too many fans want to argue about drivers, then they'd say I wasn't a 'real fan' because I wasn't willing to go fist-a-cuffs to defend against their opinion of Bobby LaBonte. Too many people want to take some kind of credit for a certain driver's victory (even moreso than Tennessee Volunteers football). Then make excuses when they don't finish in the top of the field (again, Tennessee Volunteers football) "Well, Kevin Harvick would've scored a top ten, but he had Lasagna on Saturday afternoon and that just doesn't sit right with him sometimes."

Too much coverage on TV, too. Is it really necessary to have so much coverage? To debate every aspect of every race?

Oh yeah, too many metrosexual drivers, too. Where is Harry Gant when you need him?

I've been in the same boat since '01 Daytona also. NASCAR is getting to PC for me. It doesn't have the character it use too. It's a bunch of corporate puppets behind the wheel now. The Busch series seems a little better, but the trucks are the best.

im glad we still have the local boys too, i have 5 dirt tracks within 40miles of me and the racing starts on a wed. night anything from dwarfs to the late models (my favorite) and knoxville is only a 90 min drive. plus newton is going to be buildind a race track and the rumor is getting some arca and open wheel racing.

as far as nascar ill still watch...but yeah the trucks kick butt

Now you're onto something. Winged sprint cars rule and WoO is the best of the bunch. Daytona has nothing on the Knoxville Nationals. I would love to see that event someday.

You are right. It's getting too sickly. Drivers 360, 24/7, Nascar Nation, etc.......... Too much to handle. People do work ya know and cant be in front of the tube all day and all week.

Same thing with me barely watch nascar any more it is just so boring. Went downhill after Daytona 01 with Dale Sr. getting killed.

Re: Loosing intrest in NASCAR

It was all summed up the other day when Nascar told some of the bad drivers in the big yellow trailer that Nascar dont need you as much as you need nascar. The same concept applies to the old fan base too. At least thats the way I see it.

That's why I pit crew on a Saturday Night Grass roots asphalt Super Late Model stock car race team. That's fun racing on the local level with guys with normal jobs and volunteer crews having fun. Support your local short track. You can go to 10 or more shows at your local short track compared to just 1 NASCAR race!

Re: Loosing intrest in NASCAR

That's why i love drivers like Harvick, Junior, Stewart, and Wallace. They aren't politically correct, perfect little cookie-cutter racecar drivers. They drive as hard as they can, and voice their opinion, even when they are contrary to NASCAR. They are what make it worth watching. Oh yeah, did any of you see the last Hooters race? Jody Lavender, a guy who grew up in my town, won his first race. I didn't get to watch it, but from what I read, it was quite a finish. He has a lot of talent, I wouldn't be suprised to hear a lot more from him.
