Rhino
Re: How many Deer have you shot ?? [ QUOTE ] As I mentioned folks talking about all these bucks, I was just curious as to what exactly they were since they were worth seperating the sexes??? Thanks for your opinions and good huntin' guys [/ QUOTE ] Got out on the wrong side of the bed Cornfed? Even though I didn't mention specific numbers of bucks and does I do feel like enlightening you about a few things. Like I said in my prior post I've been deer hunting for 38 years now. When I started hunting QDM wasn't even a concept. There wasn't any deer research going on at all to my knowlege. If you wanted to see a hunting show you might get lucky to catch one on the American Sportsman once a week. It was illegal to even kill a doe back then. Deer season was buck harvest only and we were allowed 3 bucks per season where I grew up in Louisiana. Back in those days hunters were told "once a spike, always a spike" too so a lot of young bucks were killed back then. In 1972 I moved to Mississippi to go to college and Mississippi allowed 5 bucks per season but does were still illegal except during bow season. Back in the mid to late 70's they started having a doe day once a year where I hunted during gun season. Some areas were given 2 doe days. Later we got 2 doe days too. You were only allowed to kill 1 doe per day on doe days. Finally in 1994 the bag limits were changed to allow a much greater increase in doe harvest in this state. Prior to that time you had to abide by doe day laws, bow harvest (3 doe per year limit including doe days), or have a hunting club signed up on the state's deer management assistance program. The club I joined in 1990 was the 1st club I ever belonged to that was on the DMAP program and one of the reasons I joined it was they were geared toward QDM. That was the 2nd year of existance for that club. That's QDM not Trophy Deer Management. That's a totally different thing IMHO. We really stacked the does up for about 8 years. There were only about 5 or 6 of us doing the majority of the doe killing too because we were spending the most time hunting. Our highest doe kill for the club in one season was around 75. After that doe thinning period it began to get a lot more difficult to kill does. The survivors had become a lot more wary. We had also cut our buck/doe ratio down from about 8/1 to about 2.5/1. The actual hard data now shows it to be a little lower than that. For the past 4 years we have set our club quota at 30 does. When that many are killed we shut off the doe killing now. As far as bucks go, like I said in the old days any legal buck was toast. That's all you could legally kill during any gun season. I didn't start bowhunting until I was 19 and I sucked as a bowhunter for several years. I was hunting with a 45# recurve back then. As I began to mature as a deer hunter I began to realize that I wasn't satisfied with just killing any decent buck, young or not so I began letting young bucks walk. The more I matured as a deer hunter, the older the bucks seemed to get that I passed up. For about 10 years now I've just hunted for mature bucks. Usually I will kill at least 1 mature buck a year but I also spend about 2 1/2 months in the woods deer hunting in the fall so I'm fortunate not to be just a weekend hunter. I've been deer hunting that much every year since May, 1994 when I became self employed. With that said I hunt out of state a lot too. I used to go to Texas a lot and if I took a buck before my hunt was over I'd doe hunt. I was allowed 2 does and 1 buck on those hunts and I actually killed more does in Texas than bucks. The other states where I've deer hunted as a nonresident are Louisiana, Kansas, Iowa, and Illinois along with some mulie hunting in Wyoming. With the exception of Louisiana I've only bowhunted those states and I'm buck hunting 1st for mature bucks over wacking any does when I'm hunting out of state. Some of those states don't even allow nonresidents to kill does. Mater of fact my home state of Mississippi does not allow nonresidents to kill does unless they own the land or lease the land in their name. Now if you feel like you need to take 4 or 5 does on your hunting place for every buck that's fine by me. Please don't assume that your same ratio of does killed to bucks should apply everywhere. We've already taken care of our buck doe ratio and we have it where we want it. Our club's plan is to attempt to kill 3 does for every 2 bucks unless our ratio starts to get out of wack again. We want to take them all out as early as possible too so I'll wack 2 or 3 myself every October. As far as other hunters on this forum goes, some have limited bag limits and some can't kill does at all. Our bag limits are very liberal in comparison to most states. Many hunters have a limited amount of time they can spend deer hunting too. Some of those hunters may only see 1 or 2 bucks a year and some years no bucks at all so they are happy with what they can harvest. They aren't blessed with having the amount of time I have to spend deer hunting so their chances for connecting on a mature buck are much less than mine. As far as I'm concerned if a hunter is proud of his harvest, regardless of the size of his rack or even if it's a doe, I'm happy for him. Every hunter needs to have the time to choose if they want to be a quality buck hunter or not. Give them time. If they don't then that's still their choice. From the hunters I've personally seen mature as deer hunters over years of hunting with them, most come to a point where they will pass young bucks up in search of mature bucks. Put a doe in front of them during bow season though (some of them during any open deer season) and that baby is going to get wacked.
Tominator
Re: How many Deer have you shot ?? Geez, I honestly don't know. My first was in 1989, then because of college and lost land, I didn't get another one until 1994. Since then I've shot at least 1 deer every year except for the past year when I missed 3. Total is between 15 and 20 I'd say. I started hunting when I was 12 I think. Although, back then I was just following Dad around with my Red Ryder. My dad never bowhunted. I started bowhunting when I was in college, 1987, so that would have made me 23. All my deer except for 1 have been bow kills.

Swamphunter
Re: How many Deer have you shot ?? I have been hunting deer for probably 20 years and have killed upwards of 30 deer. A lot of my younger years I went deerless. The last ten years I have shot most of those deer.

magnatecsteve
Re: How many Deer have you shot ?? I'll be 30 in June, took my first deer at 13.....so 18 years. Took 12 bucks...4 with flintlock muzzleloader, rest with bow. Been bowhunting since 18, so 13 years bowhunting. I estimate about 12 does total...maybe a couple more, not sure. So a grand total of about 24 deer.

billygoat
Re: How many Deer have you shot ?? I've filled a couple freezers.... I've been hunting since I was 12, and I am 31, so that's about 20 years! I have taken 5 deer with a bow, 8 with a shotgun, 4 with a muzzleloader, and I can honestly say... I have no idea how many with a gun. I have managed to take 1 with a pickup truck too. What is amazing, is if you grabbed a rack out of our shed, and asked me where I took the deer... I could probably tell you the stand and the year!
Canuck2
Re: How many Deer have you shot ?? I've been fortunate to enjoy plump freezers for a multitude of decades now - probably 60 deer or a little more. I wish I had discovered bow hunting a lot sooner than 9 years ago because that has really added a great dimension; I've got 10 of those deer via archery. Do elk and moose count? If so, add another 10 to the total. www.angelfire.com/bc/canuck2/sh.html

spikekiller
Re: How many Deer have you shot ?? Somewhere between 30 -40 deer with most of them by bow with the muzzleloader a close second. And it doesnt surprise me that this thread was hijacked into a "you have got to kill this or you are a bad hunter thread"...as that is one of the reasons i quit visiting this site as often as i used to.....years ago I came here often to talk deer hunting and have fun but then i started getting those kind of messages and decided to back out and let the real hunters do their thing.
