ThethirdI Posted May 8, 2005 Report Share Posted May 8, 2005 I was wondering what the maximum number of times was that someone has missed during a season. Last year was the worst ever for me. Between the bad luck and equipment malfunctions I missed 5 times. First time... Drew back and the arrow dropped between the prongs on my prong rest and boing there went the deer. Second time... Deer was running at full speed (I practice on moving targets) and I miscalculated where he would be in his stride. I shaved his back and the arrow was covered with hair. Third time and fourth time within five minutes of each other on a couple of does. The first arrow touched a piece of bark on a shagbark hickory and the second arrow touched a twig that was about the size of a pencil lead that I didn't see in the way. Fifth time... 32 yards dead on the mark except for the fallen stick that was lined up with her kill zone. I cut the stick clean in two with the broadhead. Perfect center punch on the stick. The arrow went 90 degrees to the left and the stick hit her kill zone. That was pretty funny though cuz it scared her nearly to death. Most folks I know don't even get that many chances and I fouled them all up in one way or another. The last miss almost saw me throwing my bow out of the tree. I have since overhauled my arrows and I'm getting a new rest. This year will not see this kind of bad action again. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Tony Posted May 8, 2005 Report Share Posted May 8, 2005 Re: The Most Misses ever in a season? about 8 years ago i missed 5 deer.. mainly because i thought i was a good shooter.. last year i missed 4 does... i developed target panic on deer... i could not get the pin on the deer without triggering the shot.. i could nail spots indoors and 3d targets out to 50 yds . but a live deer last year was just to much for me.. i dont know why , i never had that happen before.....but i got through it and made a nice shot on a doe at 31 yds last year..... I missed two deer in one season and other than that I missed one another season otherwise I have nailed everyone I shot at. I have gotten six deer in the past three seasons. The only thing that bothered me about this post is the part about grasing the back of the running deer. I hope you were young when you took that shot other wise very unethical shot. If not my dubious worst was 7 misses but I did legally kill 6 doe and 1 buck that bow season. If the 1st missed shot counted even though I killed the same deer with my 2nd arrow, make that number 9. The first miss was on a doe and I dead centered a small 3 inch tree that I just didn't see in front of the deer. It's amazing when you're focusing on the deer what you don't notice. But this year i was so dumb founded when i miss the easiest shot ever presented to me. I had passed on small deer all season, but i finally decided to take a small 5 ptr. I had him at 10 yds broadside, when i drew back my arrow fell off the string. so i let off renocked drew again... by then he was about 15 yds. So i put the pin on him and released. He jumped and ran about 20 yards. I was waiting for him to fall but no dice. I missed. It was one of those invisible branches. I missed twice last season on opening morning alone.....Put the 30 yard pin on her when she was at 18 yards and then she ran to about 30 and I put one more for good measure across her back.....I know how I missed the first time, but that second shot I have no clue b/c I used the 30 yard pin...The only thing I can think of is that I punched instead of pulling the release......Oh well I connected two nights later....... I missed 13 bucks One was a huge 12 ptr 25 wide(guy shot him and never found him, but another hunter did later) I had 3 shots on couple of them. I didn't wound any, which was good. I thought it was just me. Till one evening, i missed 5 bucks, with in a hour! Needless to say, i was very mad and wondering! I was very very good at getting on top of the deer from hunting so much and learning. But, just couldn't tag one. I had no one to teach me things. Raised by single mom(2 sisters) and she didn't hunt. So, i took myself down to shop to see what they said. Of course our shop really didn't give a crap(which is out of business now). Well..i had bent arrows (aluminum) and when i was shooting, my nocking point was changing, and from shooting from elevated stand, which was causing me to miss( i wished a had a No Peep at that time). Got things fixed, went out and shot a 11ptr It was a very good learning expierence! So, if you see a boy or girl (new archer) and notice something isn't right while they are shooting or having troubles, give them a hand or advice. I missed a doe at 30 yards then I missed 2 bucks who came within 10-15 yards of my stand, about 8 minutes apart, shot over one and under the other. This was when I had my dad's hand me down bow which is really old and couldn't shoot. Back before I really go into bowhunting and 3D shooting, I missed 4 deer in 5 minutes down in West Virginia.
