Ruger No. 1

Picked up a No. 1 in a 45-70 Gov last summer and I think that I am having accuracy problems. I sent the scope (Ultra Dot - Micro Dot 1.5-4 X 20) back to the factory and just got it back. Have not shot it yet because I am thinking about having the barrrel floated before I shoot it again. I have heard of a cheap fix that involves placing a rubber O-ring on the screw between the forearm and barrel. Any one had any experience with this?

Re: Ruger No. 1

I have a number 1 that I bedded the forearm just in front off the screw you mentioned. Just a small bed of bedding compund. It eliminated stringing groups from my 25-06. It shoots most factory ammo into MOA now.

I have read great things about the Hicks accurizer but I have never tried it.

I agree with AJ. With this fine rifle, it would be wise to go ahead and go the more expensive route and get the Hicks Accurizer. May i add that you, elwood, have choosen an awesome caliber. 45-70 and .375 H&H are probably the best all around calibers ever made. I like the 45-70 becasue you can load it from mild to magnum, from deer sized game all the way up to cape buffalo. I love the rifle too! Ruger is my favorite arms maker.

Re: Ruger No. 1

Do I have to have the Hick's installed by a gun smith or is it an easy install that I can do myself.

Also what is the cost?

The gun it's self is awesome and a blast to shoot. I have shot several different loads so far and would like to get a hold of some heavy loads just for fun. I plan on useing the gun for early deer gun season out of my bow stands. Later in the season I'll pull out my 7mm-08 or 300 WinMag for the longer shots on pipelines.

Thanks for the replies

You can install it yourself if you can do some minor inletting in the forend. E. Arthur Brown is the distributor of the Accurizer. They will also install it for you.

What "cheap O-ring fix"?

This involves placing a rubber O-ring around the stud that keeps the forend in place. This minimizes the vibration transfer from the barrel to the forend and can shrink groups size drastically. It can make the gun more repeatable. I used a rubber gasket type of stuff on my gun.
