Hunting the same spot over and over again?

I am just woindering how tollerant turkeys are to humans and hunting pressure?

I mean I know they tuck tail when they see us, but what about hunting them when they don't see you.

For example:

Can they tell a human has been there hours after the hunter has left?

Will they avoid spots or fields if they have been bumped a few times over the last week?

Can you hunt the same field edges and corners if you shot one there the day before?

Things like that.

I am wondering since there are only a few good spots we know of and we have both been hunting them a few times each.

We have not been seeing or hearing many birds since opening day when Luke had them crazy gobbling everywhere around this one field.

Thanks

Re: Hunting the same spot over and over again?

Usually birds get a bit cagey when they see hunters repeatedly in the same area(especially if they are being bumped by them). I've had new birds show up shortly after shooting one in the immediate area. So just because you shot one there doesn't kill a spot.

If the birds are gobbling less this may be due to a couple for factors. One is the natural breeding cycle which has an influence on the amount of gobbling a tom does. Then there's the fact that often the most vocal birds get shot or at the very least hunt hard right away. Then there's the hunting pressure influence on the birds.

Even if they aren't talking they can still be killed. So go get them.

Good Luck!

Do you Owl hoot before going in to the woods each morning?

[/ QUOTE ] Owl calls dont seem to get these birds at all, I have switched to crow calls but even still they are real tight lipped. However I have heard one gobble to a crow, hense the switch.

Do you call from the same places?

[/ QUOTE ] I have only hunted 3 times so far this year and no I have not called from the exact same places but in the same general fields and log roads.

Do you set up in the same places at each property?

[/ QUOTE ] No I have not hunted the same trees or corners yet, but would like to if its a reasonable chance of seeing birds.

I would leave both the crow and owl calls home. Birds in my area are very weary when these calls come out.

Mix it up, Birds can come acustom to hearing hunters calling from roads and may not gobble in response. Hit the ridges and valleys while your at it.

I would mix this up too. Try this valley today and this field edge tomorrow. Toss in a couple of decoys too. I would leave the Jake decoys home. They seem to scare the birds around here at times.

If you've been spooking them, you're apt to have problems.

This may very well be our problem we have bumped a few hens early on.

If this is the problem, what can we do other than guessing at where they are or have gone, or is this a dead horse so to speak...

Look for fresh sign on your property. Tracks, scratching and droppings. Set up and be patient. If they have been spending a lot of time in an area it's likely they will return. However it's hard to say exactly when.
