buckee
Re: Condie takes a stand on guns Good post Andy. Might be a good place to insert this letter too. [ QUOTE ] Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts... From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia Hi friends, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent, Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent; Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the state of Victoria alone, Homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. (Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not! and criminals still possess their guns!) While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in "successfully ridding Australian society of guns." You won't see this on the Canadian evening news or hear your Member of Parliament disseminating this information. The Australian experience proves it. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note Americans and Canadians, before it's too late! DON'T BE A MEMBER OF THE SILENT MAJORITY. BE OF THE VOCAL MINORITY WHO WON'T LET THIS HAPPEN IN THE U.S.A> or CANADA [/ QUOTE ]
slugshooter
Re: Condie takes a stand on guns [ QUOTE ] Rice said she favored background checks and controls at gun shows. [/ QUOTE ] I say it, and I'm a communist who doesn't care about gun rights, she says it, and it's "refreshing."

wtnhunt
Re: Condie takes a stand on guns [ QUOTE ] Rice said she favored background checks and controls at gun shows. However, she added, "we have to be very careful when we start abridging rights that the Founding Fathers thought very important." Rice said the Founding Fathers understood "there might be circumstances that people like my father experienced in Birmingham, Ala., when, in fact, the police weren't going to protect you." [/ QUOTE ] You left out part sluggo? [ QUOTE ] She said if local authorities had had lists of registered weapons, she did not think her father and other blacks would have been able to defend themselves. [/ QUOTE ] Sounds like she has a good grasp on the difference in what gun control should be and the steps in moving towards removing our rights. markyj987
Re: Condie takes a stand on guns I don't think that background checks are an unreasonable measure at all. After all, the point is to prevent criminals from buying firearms. However, I oppose the restriction of consumer choice for those who are not criminals--and the tracking of them. That is certainly an encroachment on privacy.
Guest andymansavage
Re: Condie takes a stand on guns This doesn't have to do with gun shows, but Here in Utah I just have to show the dealer my concealed firearm permit when I buy a handgun and they don't have to run any checks or observe a waiting period. It's pretty nice, plus it saves me the $8 fee every time. Do other states do this also?? Andy
slugshooter
Re: Condie takes a stand on guns NC Governor Easley signed a bill into law early this year making a CCW permit sufficient for gun purchases in the state. It makes sense, seeing as how the checks required for a CCW permit or most likely more intensive than a regular background check.

Guest andymansavage
Re: Condie takes a stand on guns It is a nice little laminated card from the dept of public saftey with a current photo that has to be updated every five years. It also has holographic logos on the front with the sherrifff's star. I have heard from travelers that a concealed firearm permit is the best form of ID you can have according to the government.
