Turkey Range

Re: Turkey Range

I really can't say how they are up there but they generally stay within the same area down here during the spring mating season. In the spring, most gobblers will usually be roosted within a 100 yard radius area virtually every day. They will start ranging a lot more when the hens go to nest and the gobblers flock up together again for the summer.

Re: Turkey Range

Good Post!

I was wondering the same thing since I have seen nor heard a turkey in over 2 weeks. The farm I am hunting is fairly large too and the farm says he has seen them in this field or that. But not lately.

Just wondering what could of turned the talk off.

Re: Turkey Range

I watch our local birds pretty closely. They are Rios so I can't speak for any other sub-species.

Our birds stay in relatively large flocks with sub-groups most of the spring and into the summer. Come fall they seem to splinter and disappear. Or so I thought.

What I discovered is they seem to migrate to another area that looks the same to me but obviously the turkey like it better. They seem to winter in this new area until it gets close to the breeding season. At which time they flock up and move back to their old stomping grounds.

Some groups I know of migrate 10 or more miles. While others move out to the the next ranch over. There are a couple of groups that I loose completely until spring.
