How did "Tom" and "Jake" come about?

I honestly don't know the answer to that one. Never thought about it. All I can tell you is the term "Tom" is not used in the south so I presume it's a northern term that came from someone north of the Mason/Dixon. In the south we have always just referred to mature gobblers as gobblers and immature gobblers as jakes. Good question VTbowman. wink.gif

Do you know why Turkeys are called "Tom"?

Benjamin Franklin named them after Thomas Jefferson who shot down his idea to have the turkey as the national bird.

as for the reference of a Jake, there is no mention of it that I could find...but did find that a young hen is called a Jenny....
