What do you do?

This is along the same line as Tony's question.

Saturday, at the Paris tourney, target 13 was a standing bear. It was standing on the other side of a small valley. If you were standing in the middle of the valley, you would be approximately 20 feet below the bear and the stake.

Here's the question: How do you range this target?

Everyone in our group tried eyeballing this target and everyone shot the target for around 38 yards. In fact, I talked myself into the 38 but was leaning at 40+. Anyway, the target was actually closer to the 32 yard range. I ended up shooting just a hair out of the ten ring.

Would like to here some feedback on this one...grin.gif

Re: What do you do?

shoot the distance from you to the target. down hill you subtract and up hill you add yardage. so do the math. you went down hill and then up again. puts the target the same distance as if it was flat groung. this works for me. other people may have another way to do it. good luck

Re: What do you do?

Ooops....let me clarify my question.

How do you range the target?

I normally count off 5 yard sections and then pick out a 20 yard landmark.

With the elevation it is near impossible to do the 5 yard increments and the 20 yard landmark is just as difficult.

I guess what I'm saying, is how do you judge targets when you have trouble doing your normal routine such as this one. I tried using the size of the target as a reference but it easily appeared farther than it actually was.

Re: What do you do?

heck i would like to know also.. i have only shot 3D for 2 years now so im learning a lot each year...

i guess you have to go on gut instinct unless there are some kind of terrain features that you can get a range on .. otherwise do what your brain tells you and shoot your best shot...

Re: What do you do?

That is why I judge all my yardage straight to the target. Hills and valleys will get you everytime if you judge by 5 or 10 yard increments or even the judge half way and double it. Practice with a range finder and make it hard on yourself, it takes time but if you can get good at judging straight to the target you will be better off.
