ESPN2 BROADCASTS PITTSBURGH ARCHERY QUALIFIER

By: By Patrick Durkin

Shari LeGate, center, interviews Wayne Endicott, silver medalist at the 2004 Great Outdoor Games. LeGate is the host of ESPN2’s “Hot Shots!” and shooting-sports analyst for ESPN.

ESPN Outdoors’ half-hour “Hot Shots!” program featuring April’s Eliminator Qualifier archery competition at Pittsburgh, Pa., will be broadcast Thursday and Sunday on ESPN, and then rebroadcast at least six more times between late May and early July in advance of the Great Outdoor Games VI.

“Hot Shots!” first airs Thursday, May 12, at 5:30 a.m. Eastern time; and Sunday, May 15, at 10 a.m. Eastern. The Pittsburgh competition – the third and final Eliminator Qualifier -- was held April 14-16, and won by newcomer Josh Deering of Maple City, Mich. Deering and three other newcomers prevailed over several Great Outdoor Games (GOG) veterans at Pittsburgh to earn their trip to Orlando for the Games, which will be July 7-10.

In addition to the show featuring the GOG’s archery competition, “Hot Shots!” also devotes a show to the event’s rifle and shotgun qualifiers. The show featuring the Pittsburgh archery qualifier will also be broadcast May 26 at 5:30 a.m., May 29 at 10 a.m., and June 11 at noon. All times are Eastern.

Also qualifying at Pittsburgh were Mark Wagner of Iowa, who finished second in the championship round to Deering; Bradley Gohlke of Houston, who defeated Chris Berry of Missouri to win third; and Karen Demaris of Oregon, who finished highest among the women.

The GOG’s archery competition -- which includes three Eliminator Qualifiers and the Games themselves -- are conducted by ArrowSport, the Archery Trade Association’s nonprofit foundation, and the National Field Archery Association (NFAA). Qualifying events were also held in February at Las Vegas and in March at Louisville.

The four newcomers advancing from Pittsburgh will take on 12 GOG veterans when they meet in Orlando. By sweeping the final four berths, the top archers at Pittsburgh became the focus of ESPN’s television crews, which taped the event for ESPN2 as part of the network’s coverage of the GOG’s target sports.

Shari LeGate, ESPN’s target-sports analyst and host of “Hot Shots!,” said the Pittsburgh qualifier captured the spirit of the Great Outdoor Games.

“We focused on the archers like Josh Deering and Mark Wagner because they proved that unknowns can come into a major event and earn the right to compete against the sport’s top players,” she said. “They showed that the ‘average guy’ can make the Great Outdoor Games and shoot against guys like Jackie Caudle, Randy Hendrix and Randy Ulmer. Archery is one of the few sports where that can happen. No unknown golfer gets to compete against Tiger Woods on a national stage.”

The ESPN Great Outdoor Games, now in their sixth year, will be held at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando. The archery event features 16 shooters, 12 of whom earned berths through the three Eliminator Qualifiers. The other four spots are held by the top finishers from the 2004 Games: gold medalist Randy Hendrix of North Carolina, silver medalist Wayne Endicott of Oregon, bronze medalist Randy Ulmer of Arizona, and fourth-place finisher Jackie Caudle of Alabama.

The four archers qualifying at the first 2005 Eliminator Qualifier, held Feb. 24-26 during the NFAA’s World Archery Festival in Las Vegas, were Keith Brown, North Carolina, first place; and Mike Slinkard, Oregon; Gerald Decker, Pennsylvania; and Ginger Hopwood, Georgia.

The four archers qualifying at the second 2005 Eliminator Qualifier, held March 17-19 during the NFAA’s Indoor National Championships in Louisville, Ky., were Rod White of Iowa, first place; and Darren Collins, Kansas; Tim Gillingham, Utah; and Cindy Decker, Pennsylvania.

Re: Archery on TV!

Kevin i get to shoot with Mark Wagner fairly often .. hes a top notch guy and a heck of a good shooter.... he set the indoor record at our state shoot with 300-58 X in the pin class !

it was sad to see him lose when he had it in the bag , but he just wanted to make the outdoor games...

hes been trying so hard ..

he would have made it at the Nationals qualifier if his arrow had been a split second quciker.. he lost to the number one seed Rod White by just .01 seconds..

i wish him the best and hope he goes all the way...
